Fall Creek girls gain early leverage for blowout against Eleva-Strum

In their first game of the season, the Fall Creek girls team hosted Eleva-Strum to devastating results for the Cardinals and victorious ones for the Crickets Monday night.

In a game where experience was mismatched, and a non-conference matchup as well, the Cardinals struggled against a team which was a contender in last season’s WIAA Division 4 regional final, but who lost out closely to Regis.

Starting off slowly E-S was shut out completely in the first quarter 25-0 by the home team. Fall Creek enterprised on the Cardinals at the hoop with a tough defense, not allowing much shooting room for the visiting team. Once down the court, it was hard to stop the Crickets from racking up countless baskets.

Finally, junior post player Josie Olson sank two points for the visiting Cardinals midway through the second quarter, making the game 32-2 in Fall Creek’s favor. Gaining a bit of momentum, E-S was able to make two more points through the hoop before a big shot at the top of the key for an extra three points put them at nine just before the half.

With Fall Creek holding a big advantage with a total of 39 points, things did not get better for the Cardinals heading into the second half.

Coming on a bit stronger and encouraged by reaching double digits, the Cardinals put up somewhat of a fight against the higher-ranked Crickets, but did not overcome their opponents. Fall Creek took their first win at home with a 66-23 victory over Eleva-Strum.

Next for the Cardinals is the Gilmanton Panthers, who will be hosted by E-S Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m.

Fall Creek has faced one another opponent at home when they hosted Altoona Tuesday evening. They look to travel to Cadott on Thursday, Dec. 4 for a 7:30 p.m. matchup.
