Local students win essay contests

The VFW Post 8514 recently honored a select few students who worked on written works to enter contests asking them to address themes regarding veterans and the United States.

High school students Mariah Filla and Ethan Dahl took up the challenge of an audio essay, which asked them to outline this year’s theme: “Why Veterans are Important to our Nation’s History and Future.”

Filla won the Voice of Democracy competition and the prize money for her submission while Dahl came in second, honored for his efforts to highlight the importance of veterans as the competition requested.

In the Patriot’s Pen contest, local home-schooled student Tyler Schearer was the winner. For this contest, submissions must submit an essay outlining the theme “Why I Appreciate America’s Veterans” and have it evaluated. Schearer was chosen for his work and awarded as well.
