Thunder gain early lead over Fall Creek

Crickets overthrow Osseo-Fairchild to maintain undefeated record

In an unexpected tip-off, Fall Creek found themselves trailing Osseo-Fairchild early in their match as hosts on Thursday, Dec. 18.

Facing off against their conference opponents, the Thunder got the jump over the Crickets with a 2-point bank shot by Nicole Pralle. As Fall Creek struggled to keep up, they posted two points of their own, but were trailing 6-3 with five minutes left in the first quarter.

Foul trouble kept both teams at the free throw line, though rebounds were also a sticking point for the O-F team as the height advantage on the Fall Creek side began to dominate play and enterprise on missed shots at the hoop by the Thunder.

As Fall Creek’s Jonalyn Wittwer took off down court in a breakaway attempt at the basket, O-F freshman Brook Freitag gave the Crickets a shot at the line with her second foul in the first eight minutes of play. Wittwer added one, making it a 2-point game, and O-F was 4-0 in their foul count against their opponents.

In an impressive move under the net, Wynonah Filla redeemed a stolen ball from the Crickets’ Olivia Burghardt by yanking the basketball from the junior’s hands during an attempt to tie the game.

However, a full-court press became too much for the Thunder, who eventually slipped behind Fall Creek to end the first quarter of play down 14-9. Not going down without a fight, O-F continued to push to the hoop with Pralle making a number of baskets, but Fall Creek senior Tatum Mayenschein proved to be too much for the visiting Thunder, who were unable to fight off their towering opponents. Mayenschein had a number of blocks and served as a threat from the 3-point line as well when she sank a long shot minutes into the second quarter.

By halftime, the Crickets were sitting in a more comfortable lead at 34-22 over the Thunder.

It was slow going to blow away the 2-2 team however, as Fall Creek was held to a neck-in-neck competition with O-F out on the court. Outscored by just three, the Thunder kept pushing, even managing to best Fall Creek in the final period by one point. However, the advantage the Crickets enjoyed during intermission kept them elevated and made the Thunder unable to close the points gap against the undefeated team.

Mayenschein led the Crickets in scoring once again with 18 total points, followed by Burghardt, who had 10.

On the O-F side, Filla led the team in points with 18 of her own, followed by Pralle who posted 14.

With the victory Fall Creek continues their 5-0 West Cloverbelt Conference record, sitting just below the Regis Ramblers. O-F falls to 2-3, just under the Altoona Railroaders, who have a 2-2 record in conference.

O-F faced Augusta in a Tuesday night game. Next, the Thunder will travel to the Chetek-Weyerhaeuser Holiday Classic on Monday, Dec. 29, which begins with a game against Hayward at 1:30 p.m.

The Crickets will have time to rest over the holiday break before traveling to Bloomer, also on Monday, Dec. 29, for a 3 p.m. non-conference matchup.
