Altercation between hunters in Pepin leads to one arrest, possible pending charges

An altercation between hunters led to the arrest of a Pepin man, and injuries to a Hmong man.
Pepin County Chief Deputy Greg Balow confirmed that on November 5, 64-year-old Sao Lue Vang, of Menomonie, received significant injuries during an altercation with 43-year-old Kevin Elberg, of Pepin.
Vang reportedly wandered onto land owned by Elber's father while he was squirrel hunting with two other men. He was carrying a .22 rifle.
The Pepin County Sheriff's Department received a report of a trespasser, and requested an officer respond to the property. Balow stated Elberg's mother was the individual who called police.
Balow said the responding officer received an initial statement from Elberg that there had been an altercation in which Vang had received injuries, and an ambulance was called. Pepin Ambulance transported Vang to Wabasha, and he was then transferred to Rochester to be treated for a liver laceration and injuries to his hand. He was hospitalized for three days, then released.
Elberg was arrested November 8 at approximately 7 p.m., for possible charges of substantial battery and recklessly endangering safety. He was released at 9:45 a.m. November 10 at the request of the District Attorney without bond, with no formal charges filed.
Balow stated the case is being reviewed by the District Attorney.
