Clarence “Freck” V. Gruber

Clarence “Freck” V. Gruber, 86 went to eternal rest on January 23, 2018 at the WI Veterans Home, Chippewa Falls surrounded by family.
He was born on January 18, 1932 to Jack and Mary (Bauer) Gruber in the Town of Canton, Buffalo County. Clarence grew up in the Lima area on the family farm and graduated from Sacred Heart Schools in 1949. He worked on the farm until he joined the US Army in February of 1954. Clarence served as a Private 1st Class during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1956.
On July 21, 1958, he married Martha Harlson at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Durand, WI. Clarence had various jobs over the years until he bought a gas station and bulk fuel oil business in Elk Mound which he named Gruber Oil Company.
Clarence enjoyed playing cards, gardening, hunting, gambling, bowling, golfing, ginseng hunting, cutting wood and most importantly going to his children’s sporting events. He rarely missed a sporting event. He gave his children their first job, teaching them great work ethic. One of those ways was he never refused fuel oil delivery to a home with children at any time. While in the nursing home he really enjoyed visitors, especially when his family came.
He is survived by his wife, Martha of Chippewa Falls of 59 years ; six children: Donna of Altoona, Dan (Jeannine) of Hillsdale, Dawne of Elk Mound, Dewey of Altoona, Diana of Boyd and Darla of Eau Claire; 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Clarence is preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Gruber, siblings: Evelyn Sabelko, Kenneth Gruber, Glen Gruber; brother in-law, Hubert Sabelko and son in-law, Dan Henrikson, best friend and cousin, Ray “Sicky” Bauer and many other relatives and friends.
Clarence was well known and was liked by many in the community of Elk Mound. He was a Lions Club member and involved in the American Legion Post 0037. He was a kind and giving man. He was an avid Packer and Brewer fan.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Lima at 11:30 A.M. with Fr. Amir officiating. A burial will be held at Northern WI Veterans Cemetery at a later date. Visitation was held from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service.
