Jane Boehrer, age 81, passed on February 25, 2019 in her home in Solana Beach from metastasized breast cancer. She was born November 18, 1937 and raised in Durand, Wisconsin. Her parents were Charles and Ann Castleberg Boehrer. She was the youngest of 5 children. She graduated from Durand High School in 1955. Jane is survived by two siblings, Stephen and Blanche, as well as 11 nieces and nephews.
Jane focused her life on two remarkable careers especially for a woman born in the 1930’s between the wars. She earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin and completed a year internship at the UC San Francisco Medical School in dietetics before joining the US Air Force in hopes of seeing the world. Although she did not get to travel in the Air Force, she had interesting assignments, one of which included running a metabolic unit that tested weightlessness in space. Through active service and as a reservist, she earned the rank of Colonel.
After the Service, Jane worked for San Diego Unified School District for 25 years. At the time of her retirement in 2000, Jane had advanced to the Director of Food and Nutrition Services overseeing 200 schools.
Jane was sustained by her strong faith in God and her participation in the Catholic Church. She took at least 5 guided pilgrimages to Europe with her faith community. At the time of her death, Jane was a lay Carmelite and a member of the St. John’s Catholic Church, 1001 Encinitas Blvd, Encinitas 92024.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 26, 2019 at St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Church. Burial with Honor Guard will take place in the St. Mary’s Church Cemetery.
