Eagles take silver in state championship

The communities showed the team tremendous support and the excitement was everywhere last week...

After a 13-game winning streak, the Pepin-Alma Eagles fell to Owen-Withee at Camp Randall November 20, 17-12, to take second place in the State in Division 7.
The Eagles found themselves in an unfamiliar situation, as Owen-Withee was the first to score with 5:53 remaining in the first quarter, taking a 6-0 lead.
It was a battle of defenses as each team held the other away from the endzone and forced turnovers. The Blackhawks were able to boot a field goal with 9 seconds remaining in the half to take a 9-0 lead.
The Eagles’ defense held Owen-Withee through the third quarter, and vice versa, with neither team scoring.
Owen-Withee scored again in the fourth with 7:24 remaining to take a 17-0 lead, with a dim outlook on the remainder of the game.
With 4:55 remaining, the Eagles reached the endzone on a 6-yard pass from Sam Mueller to Ronnie Engstrand. The conversion pass was no good, and the Eagles came up to 17-6.
With 2:50 remaining in the game the Eagles scored again and cut the Blackhawks’ lead to 5, 17-12, on a pass from Mueller to Randall Engstrand for 10 yards. The conversion pass was no good.
The score held through the rest of the game, and the Eagles took their first loss of the season, 17-12.
Mueller passed 10-for-20 for 165 yards with two touchdowns. Trevor Heit led with 42 rushing yards in 13 attempts, followed by Lance Johnson with 28 in 9. Mueller added 23 in 4.
Caiden Haake tallied 99 yards with 3 receptions, followed by Randall Engstrand with 55 in 4.
Randall Engstrand recorded 11.5 tackles, followed by James Sterry with 8. Johnson added 6.5.
The Eagles out-passed the Blackhawks 165 yards to 56, but Owen-Withee owned the rushing game with 241 yards over Pepin-Alma’s 101. The Eagles suffered 8 penalties for 64 yards, and lost two fumbles. They recovered one of two Owen-Withee fumbles.
Head Coach Mike Olson said it was a great experience getting to state, and being able to play at Camp Randall.
“The communities showed the team tremendous support and the excitement was everywhere last week,” he said. “The team, players, and coaches would like to thank everyone for all their support.”
Olson said they were happy to make it to state, but disappointed in knowing they could have had the gold ball.
“We could not get anything going the first half,” he said. “We were just missing our passes and had a few penalties, which hurt.”
Olson said the Eagles’ defense did a great job in keeping the team in the game after some of the miscues.
“In the second half, we were able to start the first three drives, but not finish them due to penalties and turnovers,” he said.
Olson also said he gives the team a lot of praise for never quitting.
“We were down 17-0 with 7:55 left in the game, and we were able to drive down, score, get the ball back in less than two minutes, and score again with four minutes still left,” he said. “We had one more chance to get the ball back, but couldn’t stop Owen-Withee when we needed to, so they were able to run off the clock.”
Olson said he’s very proud of the team in what they were able to accomplish this season.
The Eagles will part ways with seniors Sam Mueller, Nick Spencer, Zach Vreeland, Derek Dusek, Sam Mathias, and Ronnie Engstrand. Fifteen Eagles will return as seniors next season.
The Eagles tallied a total 1,825 passing yards and 18 touchdowns, with 3,671 rushing yards and 54 touchdowns this season, averaging 38.1 points per game.
Mueller passed for 1,755 yards this season. Heit rushed for 1,362 yards, followed by Johnson with 1,190. Ronnie Engstrand tallied 899 receiving yards, followed by Caiden Haake with 462.
Congratulations on a great season, Pepin-Alma Eagles!
