Garry R. Blomberg, age 74, passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2015 at his home with his family by his side. He was a loving father and husband and touched many lives around him. He was born on May 22, 1940 in Plum City, WI, the son of the late Russell and Gertrude (Anderson) Blomberg. He was united in marriage to Martha Ann Wulff on August 11, 1962 in Red Wing, MN. Garry graduated from The University of Wisconsin- River Falls with a degree in Ag Education and Chemistry in 1962. He taught for 2 years in Letcher, SD, and later joined the UW-Extension as Farm Management Agent for Outagamie County. He received his Master’s Degree in Meat & Animal Science from UW Madison in 1972. Garry and Martha moved to Monroe, WI as Green County Agricultural Agent and Office Chair from 1973-1978.
In 1978 they moved to Winnebago County to become Office Chair and continuing his Agricultural Agent work. He served on and chaired numerous state committees over his years in University Wisconsin-Extension. Garry led the hosting of the 1985 Wisconsin Farm Progress Days in Winnebago County. As a community educator, he taught from college level to workshops at hundreds of farm and horticulture-related classes during his career. He was a voice for farm-related news on a number of radio programs throughout Wisconsin, as well as in print. Later in his career he focused on Community Resource Development, guiding town planners and business leaders in urban development, until his retirement in 1996. He received Distinguished Service Awards from the National CAA, Wisconsin CAA and Epsilon Sigma Phi.
Garry proudly served our country in the National Guard as part of Company C 2d Bn 127th Infantry from 1966 - 1972. He was on duty to quell Madison and Milwaukee Riots. Garry received the Milwaukee Journal Outstanding Soldier of the Year Achievement Award in 1967.
Garry was an active member of Plymouth Congregational Church, serving as an Elder, Awana Commander & Leader, usher, Choir, and SS teacher over the years.
After retirement, Garry pursued interests in photography, genealogy and was President of the Fox Valley Swedish Society from 2008-2012. Garry joined Martha in her heritage ventures as a member of Sons of Norway for many years. During summers in his retirement, he was actively involved in preserving his Swedish heritage by restoring their 1876 homestead and 1919 historic round barn. In his free time, he wrote programs for MMC Volunteer Services and for MASA, as well as, volunteering for EAA. Special times of travel to Europe with Krista, Mark & BJ and a genealogy trip to Scandinavia are fond memories.
Garry is survived by his wife, Martha of 52 years, three children: Brian (Kareen) of Montgomery, IL, Mark (Bonnie Jean) of San Francisco, CA, & Krista of New York City; Loving brothers and sisters-in-law, Al & Nancy Wulff, Larry Alden, Peter & LaVonne Komlos, Tom & Kathy Wulff & Grant & Mary Wulff. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews. Garry was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial Service will be held 11 AM on Saturday, January 10, 2015, at Lund Covenant Church, in Lund, WI (8 miles from Pepin on County Rd CC).
