Panther girls win, win, win

The Panther girls basketball team took three wins last week, beginning with a big 74-32 victory over Osceola January 6.
The Panthers got out to an early lead, outscoring Osceola 26-8 in just the first quarter.
Durand added another 20 before halftime, holding the Chieftans to just 4 in the second quarter to hold a 46-12 lead at the half.
The Panthers took things down a notch in the third but still outscored Osceola 15-12, and secured the win in the fourth with 13 points over Osceola’s 8.
The Panthers recorded a 74-32 Middle Border Conference victory with the win.
Three Panthers scored in the double digits against Osceola, led by Whitney Tomlinson and Ambree Schlosser with 19 each. Morganne Gruber put up 18 for the Panthers.
Marisa Koller pulled down 13 rebounds for Durand, followed by Schlosser with 11. Gruber tallied up six steals for the Panthers.
The Panthers shot 30 of 66 from the field, making 7 of 18 attempted 3-pointers. They shot 7 of 10 at the line. Gruber shot 4-for-4 from the line. Tomlinson went 1-for-2, and Schlosser shot 2-for-4.
The Panthers totaled 52 rebounds, 21 assists, and 15 steals, and gave up 13 turnovers.
The Panthers next visited Baldwin-Woodville January 8, and took another MBC win, 54-44, over the Blackhawks.
The game was tight in the first half, with Durand outscoring B-W just 17-16 in the first quarter.
The Blackhawks kept close in the second quarter, too, but Durand came out ahead, 13-11, to take a 30-27 lead at the half.
The third quarter was a game changer, as the Panthers outscored Baldwin-Woodville 13-5 to extend their lead.
Baldwin-Woodville came back in the fourth, outscoring Durand 12-11, but didn’t have enough steam to catch up and overtake the Panthers, giving Durand the 54-44 win.
Three Panthers again scored in the double digits, this time led by Gruber with 23 points. Tomlinson put up 11, followed by Schlosser with 10.
Koller again led with 8 rebounds, followed by Gruber and Tomlinson, each with 5. Koller also tallied 7 steals for Durand.
The Panthers shot 16 of 33 in the field, and 16 of 26 from the line. They made 6 of 12 attempted 3-pointers.
Gruber shot 11-of-12 from the line, while Koller went 3-for-4.
The Panthers tallied 21 rebounds, 10 assists, and 13 steals, giving up 14 turnovers.
To top off the week of play, the Panthers hosted Barron on Saturday for a non-conference match-up and took a 65-47 victory.
Gruber again led with a whopping 25 points for the Panthers, followed by Schlosser with 15, and Koller with 13. Gruber also pulled down 9 rebounds to lead the Panthers, followed by Koller wtih 8, and Tomlinson with 7.
The game pushed Gruber over the 1,000 point mark (1,005 total points) in her career, and is the 10th Panther to do so in school history.
Koller dished out 7 assists, followed by Gruber with 6. Gruber also tallied 3 steals. Schlosser recorded 4 steals.
The Panthers shot 253 of 55 from the field, and made 6 of 14 attempted 3-pointers. They shot 9 of 17 from the line. Gruber shot 6-for-8 from the line.
The Panthers tallied 33 rebounds, 18 assists, and 12 steals, giving up 10 turnovers.
The Panthers are 6-0 in the Middle Border Conference, and 10-1 overall.
The Panthers visited MBC’s No. 2 team Somerset (5-1) on Tuesday, but results were unavailable at press time. They host Amery on Friday, and Elk Mound on Monday. See next week’s Courier-Wedge for results of this week’s games.
