W. BRADFORD MARTIN, MD

W. Bradford Martin, MD, age 74, of Whitehall, died on Wednesday June 19, 2019 in the Gundersen Tri-County Hospital in Whitehall surrounded by family and friends.
Brad was born on December 12, 1944 in Wabasha, MN to Wayne and Iva (Wall) Martin. He attended elementary school in Hicks Valley in a small one room school house. Brad graduated as valedictorian of Pepin High School in 1962. He attended the University of Wisconsin River Falls and after just three years was accepted into medical school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he graduated in 1969. He later received a degree from the University of River Falls in the form of an Honorary Doctorate in 2012 in recognition of his humanitarian efforts.
During medical school he met his wife, Joanne Selkurt. They were married shortly after graduation in Racine, WI on June 21, 1969. That summer they moved to Seattle, WA where he completed his medical internship. During the next seven years, while completing their medical training they also spent two years serving in the United States Public Health Service stationed in Tehlequah, OK working with the Indian Health Service.
Brad completed his General Surgery Residency in La Crosse in 1978 and began practicing in Whitehall with the Gundersen Clinic and Tri-County Memorial Hospital. Despite the trend of medicine becoming more specialized, Dr. Martin maintained his ability to treat any condition that presented. This served the community of Whitehall well through the years. As an expert in the art of medicine, he relished any opportunity to pass on his knowledge and love of medicine to numerous colleagues. He encouraged many others to pursue careers in medicine. Following “retirement” in 2010 Brad began working with the Department of Corrections serving as a doctor in the Wisconsin prison system.
During a residency rotation in the early 1970’s, Brad and Joanne spent two months working in Puerto Cabezas, a small coastal community in Nicaragua. This experience was the beginning of an over 40 year passion of international humanitarian work.
In the early 1990’s, Brad started to work exclusively with the Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partners. He served in many leadership roles throughout the organization. Brad was instrumental in planning and executing countless trips to the country including the Martin Eye Glass Mission annually for 19 years. Brad and Joanne hosted six Nicaraguan foster children who came to Whitehall in order to seek medical care. Most impressively, he orchestrated the delivery of 50 emergency vehicles including fire trucks and ambulances.
In 1984, Brad became involved with the Whitehall Volunteer Fire Department. Although he served numerous roles within the department, his favorite role was the Training Officer. It was his passion to train others to improve their skills.
In addition to helping others, Brad enjoyed spending time on his childhood farm in Pepin, WI, woodworking, reading, traveling, flying (he received his private pilot certificate), ham radio (WA9JMX), playing every instrument he picked up, most impressively the piano and fixing old pump organs. Papa Brad’s most cherished time was spent spoiling his five grandchildren most often with countless sweets.
Brad is survived by his wife, Joanne Selkurt-Martin, MD, two daughters, Julie (Steve Hayden) Martin, MD and Elizabeth (Andrew) Bjerke, Ph.D.; five grandchildren, Lily, Alexander and Owen Hayden and Logan and Madeline Bjerke; his in-laws, Jim Kroening, Loretta and Dan Miner, LaVerne Selkurt, Lynette and George Zimmer and Lenny Selkurt; nieces and nephews, Joanne Chalgren, Connie Ducklow, Wes Kroening, Mary Kroening Tompkins, Paul Kroening, Gwendolyn Nguyen, Cassaundra Selkurt and Chloe Selkurt.
In addition to his parents, Brad was preceded in death by two sisters, Doreen Moline MD and Ann Kroening; his in-laws, Leonard and Helen Selkurt, Richard Selkurt and Carl Moline; and a nephew, Mike Kroening.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the Whitehall Memorial High School Auditorium with burial in the Lincoln Cemetery both in Whitehall. Pastor Peter Jonas will officiate. A life celebration and luncheon will be held at the Whitehall Fire Station following the service.
Visitation will be Monday, June 24, 2019 from 4-7 p.m. in Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Whitehall and two hours prior to the service on Tuesday in the Whitehall Memorial High School Auditorium in Whitehall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to the Whitehall Fire Department or Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partners.
The Jack Funeral Home in Whitehall is assisting the family with arrangements.
