Arlene Rachel Binder De Vries passed away peacefully in her sleep in the morning hours of Friday, October 31, 2025, at Aviva Riverbend. Arlene was born March 29, 1938, to Rachel and Art Binder, in Plainview, Minnesota. She was a lifelong member of St. Joachims Catholic Church in Plainview. Arlene graduated from Plainview High School as Salutatorian in 1956. Arlene worked at her parents’ businesses, Binder Sales & Service as a bookkeeper, and drove bus for Binder Bus Service. She was just 9 years old when she began helping with the bookkeeping. She began driving school bus in high school, picking up classmates in a station wagon until she was able to get her school bus endorsement at age 18. October 11, 1958, she married her husband of fifty years, Marty DeVries. Arlene and Marty lived most of their lives in Plainview, and together they raised two daughters, Carla and Brenda. In 1973, Arlene and Marty purchased the assets of A. W. Schuchard and started De Vries Sand & Gravel. In 1997 Marty and Arlene retired from the excavating business and then retired from De Vries Bus Service in 1999. After retirement, Arlene and Marty moved to Knife River, Minnesota for a few years before returning to Plainview. They spent their winters in Texas, also traveling the southern United States. Arlene loved to travel, and her and Marty had travelled the world throughout their time together. Arlene lost Marty on February 12, 2008. Arlene continued her winters in Texas, coming back home for the warmer months to spend with family and friends.
Arlene loved her family and friends and made every effort to spend time with them. She made sure that her daughters knew their aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents, coordinating great times with sisters Ann, Jean and Millie and their families. Volunteering at the local nursing home was very important to her. In her earlier years, she would perform with Jean & the Singalongs, lifting the spirits of the residents with their songs. Later, she volunteered as part of the sewing group, mending clothes for the residents. Dancing was a big part of Arlene’s life that gave her lots of joy. Arlene loved her friends and enjoyed entertaining them with coffee times, lunches, and any little holiday gathering she could put together. Arlene also loved sports. Her favorite sports athlete was Tom Brady
Arlene’s family extends sincere gratitude and thanks to all the staff members at Aviva Riverbend and Seasons Hospice for the care, love and support they gave to our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and to us, Arlene’s family, these past few years.
