James Francis Melvin, 63, of Austin and formerly of Plainview, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 18, 2021 of biliary cancer, with his family by his side at St. Marks Living in Austin. He was born on April 3, 1958, in Rochester to Arthur and Carmena (Lee) Melvin.
Jim attended Plainview High School. He farmed with father and uncle and worked seasonal jobs at Lakeside Packing. Jim competed in horse shows, winning many trophies with his horse, Star. His dog, Mr. Bojangles (Bo) was a constant companion. He loved family gatherings and going out to eat. His nieces and nephews enjoyed Jim’s company and the stories he had to tell. One of Jim’s favorite pastimes was listening to music.
Jim is survived by his mother, Carmena Melvin of Rochester; sisters, Mary Melvin (Harry Menk) of Plymouth, Becky (Wayne) Scherbring of Mantorville, and Lori (Mike) Robertson of Rochester; nieces and nephews, Dustin (Ann) Kruger, Brant (Cassie) Kruger, Bridget (Erik) Gordon, Joe (Lorena) Menk, Tasha Lewison, Katie Menk, Erik (Dani) Lewison, Grace Menk; great nieces and nephews, Brexton, Henry, Bella, Lucy, Sam, Aaron, Emma, Jacob, Charlie, and Floyd. He was preceded in death by his father Arthur Melvin, maternal grandparents Ed and Ella Lee, and paternal grandparents Frank and Patricia Melvin.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 2, at Schleicher Funeral Homes, Plainview Chapel with Deacon John DeStazio officiating. Burial will follow the service at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery – Conception in rural Plainview. Family and friends may visit on Wednesday, December 1 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Schleicher Funeral Homes, Plainview Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
