Joseph “Chunk” Leonard Skelly

Joseph “Chunk” Leonard Skelly, 88, of Buckeye, AZ and formerly of Elgin, passed away at his home in Buckeye on January 21, 2021. He was born February 18, 1932 in Rochester to John and Evelyn (Streich) Skelly. He attended school in Rochester, and left home at an early age to farm with Violet and Alvin Sell of rural Potsdam, and then attended school in Potsdam and Elgin. He then went into the US Air Force serving his country during the Korean War receiving the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

Joseph married the love of his life, Betty Jean Overton on October 22, 1960 in Wabasha. After marriage they farmed in the Potsdam area for his entire working career and wintered in Arizona for the past 10 years. Joseph was a man of many names, “Joe, Blackie, Joseph, Leonard, Buddy, Sonnie, Chunk”, but Charlie and Sis still called him Dad. He enjoyed watching wrestling, going deer hunting, attending demo derbies, and especially loved spending time with his family. He was a member of the Rochester American Legion Post #92.

Joseph is survived by his two children, Jeff (Peggy) Skelly of Plainview and Sandy (KC) Tottingham of Elgin; seven grandchildren and thirteen greatgrandchildren; a brother, Vernon (Dawn) Leitz of Rochester; and three sisters, Patricia Laqua of Mazeppa, Pamela (Cam) Helder of Pine Island, and Debbie Lande of Winona. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty Jean on November 11, 2014, a grandson, Waylon Pugh, three brothers, Robert James, and Richard, and four sisters, JoAnne Bale, Beverly Overton, Kathy Skelly, Sharon Roderick.

A walk-through visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 9 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Schleicher Funeral Homes, Plainview Chapel, and one hour prior to the service. A private funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 10 at 11:00 a.m. at Schleicher Funeral Homes, Plainview Chapel with Rev. Dr. Scott Fiege officiating. Burial will be in the Elgin Cemetery with military rites by the Rochester American Legion Post #92.
