LaVerne “Gus” Wayne Spring

LaVerne “Gus” Wayne Spring, 80, of Elgin, passed away at his home in Elgin surrounded by his family on Wednesday evening, January 27, 2021. He was born February 29, 1940 in Elgin to George and Hilda (Adler) Spring. He grew up in Elgin attending school and graduating from Elgin High School in 1958. He married Susan Smith on May 16, 1981 in Plainview.
Gus lived his entire lifetime in Elgin. He worked for the Minnesota Department of Transportation for 33 years and 9 months, retiring in 2004. He served his community as an Elgin Fireman for many years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin. Whether on the ice, or walking a trout stream, his passion was fishing. He loved to feed his birds and squirrels, work on his flowers, take ranger rides, and simply putz around. He was a fan of a good garage sale and the Green Bay Packers. Nothing made him happier than being at home, in a comfy chair, with his family by his side and grandkids running around.
Gus is survived by his loving wife, Susan Spring of Elgin; two sons, Lyle (Heather) Spring of Fountain City, WI, and Randy (Ashley) Spring of White Bear Lake; a daughter, Jessica (Clayton) Kroening of Rochester; seven grandchildren, Chris, Stephanie, Clarissa, Elsie, Noah, Eli, and Crosby; two sisters, Ione Jacobs of Plainview, and Jeanette (Donald) Quam of Rochester. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and three brothers.
A walk-through visitation was held on Sunday, January 31 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Schleicher Funeral Homes, Plainview Chapel, and one hour prior to the service at the church. A private funeral service was held on Monday, February 1, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin with Pastor Terrill Bramstedt officiating. Burial followed in the Elgin Cemetery. Masks and social distancing are required at all times.
