PEM football team helps pack food for the hungry

Plainview-Elgin-Millville football players practiced in church on Aug. 22.
Specifically, the Church of Christ, 205 1st St. NE in Plainview.
The youngsters got in a good workout, helping others as part of the third-annual Hiawatha Valley MobilePack, in which hundreds of volunteers pack protein, vitamins/micronutrients and vegetables to feed hungry, malnourished kids in other nations.
"It is one of the most important practices of the year," PEM coach Kevin Lamb said. "They've got time, they've got strength, and this is something that everyone can contribute to. I tell them, 'This is practice No. 2. Let's go help somebody.'"
Lamb's players and hundreds more local volunteers packed ingredients in the local Feed My Starving Children event - also held Friday and Saturday, Aug. 23-24 at the church. Feed My Starving Children is a Christian non-profit organization which coordinates the packaging and distribution of food to people in developing nations.
Donations fund meal ingredients and volunteers hand-pack the meals, which are donated to Feed My Starving Children food partners around the world. Each item is labeled with country of origin and how many meals the purchase provides.
In Plainview, the 2019 goal was to recruit 1,400 volunteers, raise $65,520, and pack 273,000 meals - enough to fill a shipping cart.
