Miss Plainview Pageant: 'A bit of everything'

Kaelyn McCaleb crowned 2019 queen

It has a bit of everything a big pageant might, this Miss Plainview Pageant.
There's a buzz of excitement and anticipation, with flashing cameras, singing, dancing, storytelling and drama.
A large crowd gathered Aug. 10 for the annual event at Plainview-Elgin-Millville High School. There was a nice meal, catered by Bennett's Food and Catering in Plainview, and everyone gathered for a memorable evening in the school gym.
They watched video highlights created by Mackenzie McCullough, the 2018 Miss Plainview, and cheered for the 2018 Corn on the Cob Days King and Queen, Mike Jeppson and Sherri Norton. Little Hallie Busby, 9, sang "True Colors," and your 2019 King and Queen, Dan Schmitz and Penny Hoekstra, were introduced.
Miss Plainview royalty danced to a lively tune, "Under the Sea," and there was a presentation of sponsors' signs.
Guest speaker Caroline Rother, the 2013 Miss Plainview runner-up, told her story of farm life, before and after high school; she was an FFA leader and now works as a herdswoman at JM Dairy in Plainview.
Rother, a 2014 PEM graduate, said she has had "teaching moments," and learned responsibility through caring for cattle - keeping cows fed, watered and comfortable.
"Anybody can be a leader in themselves," Rother said. "Being a good worker and being a good person will get you farther than you expect."
