Soccer field opens in Plainview
With the fall soccer season approaching, Plainview-Elgin-Millville soccer players and anyone else who enjoys the sport have a new place to play and practice, as a group of parents and PEM community members have established a soccer field at Eastwood Park.
Ben Jacobs, PEM boys' soccer junior varsity head coach and assistant varsity head coach, organized the project, which was not affiliated with the PEM school district or any specific soccer team.
He said initial ideas for the project stemmed from the community's need for a soccer field, adding that Plainview has lacked a publicly-accessible space to play soccer, and even competitive teams have had limited access to space and equipment.
“Last summer, I had just been observing that, for the majority of the spring and summer, there wasn't really anything of a soccer field for the kids to use in Plainview,” Jacobs said.
“The youth soccer teams in the spring and fall had very minimal field space with nets, if any, to use and learn on, and the kids in general who wanted to play in the summer had really no space with nets in Plainview that anyone could go use when they wanted to.”
He emphasized that the new field is intended for both competitive and recreational use.
