Vera E. Schwantz

Vera E. Schwantz, 108, of Elgin, died Friday, June 19, 2020 at Green Prairie Rehabilitation Center in Plainview.
Vera was born April 18, 1912 in Quincy Township, Olmsted County to Daniel and Elsie (Johnson) Herman. She attended Schad’s Corner country school and graduated from Plainview High School in 1929. Vera then attended Winona Teachers College earning a BS in Education. She taught at various country schools in the area for 20 years, then from 1957 to 1977, taught at Elgin Elementary School. On June 10, 1943 she married Lester V. Schwantz in Elgin. Lester died in 1989. Vera was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin and was active in the ladies guild along with many teacher organizations. Her church family was important to her vitality. In retirement she enjoyed traveling, playing cards and baking buns and apple pies. She took great pride in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always used to say “There’s not a bad one in the bunch”.
Vera is survived by her children; Susan (Michael) Hile of Spring Lake Park, MN and Alan (Franny) Schwantz of Elgin, grandchildren; Timothy (Kerry) Hile, Tara (John Roettger) Schwantz, Tyscen (Richard) Hagen and Todd (Brook) Schwantz; great-grandchildren Brett, Ryan and Drew Hile, Ainsley and Jayda Schwantz.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 1 granddaughter Dr. Amy Hile and 3 sisters, Gladys Claussen, Maxine Hall and Donna Zabel.
Funeral service is Wednesday, June 24, 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin with Pastor Terrill Bramstedt officiating. Burial is at the Elgin Cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday, one hour prior to the service at the church.
