Gary R. Maki

Gary R. Maki, age 68, died on December 29, 2025. He was born on February 24, 1957, in Sandstone, Minnesota. Gary graduated from Cromwell High School. He married Kit Rose Smith in 1979 and adopted her daughter Brein; they had four children and were later divorced.
Throughout his life, Gary held numerous jobs, with masonry laborer and cook being two of his favorites. He had a creative soul and designed and built many fireplaces, walkways, and patios for family, friends, and others who sought out his work. He also expressed himself through writing poetry and photography. From time to time, he would gift his creations to others—such as a framed photograph of a cow he had taken himself—small gestures that reflected his creative nature.
Gary faced mental health challenges throughout much of his adult life. When he was well, his family was his world, and he rarely missed an opportunity to proudly share updates about their achievements, careers, sporting events, and milestones. He always made time to call his parents and siblings to check in and exchange news. Those who knew him often describe Gary as quiet, kind, and soft-spoken. During times when his illness overwhelmed him, he struggled to remain physically stable and safe. We find comfort in knowing that he is now at peace in spirit, mind, and body.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Franklin and Ellen (Heikkila) Maki; his sister, Sue Frieburg; his sister-in-law, Nancy Maki; and many aunts, uncles, and grandparents.
He is survived by his children: Brein (Jeff Schwarze), Jennifer (Jerome Kwasek), Abigail (Ivan), Joseph (Nathalie), and Jacob; his brothers, Duane (Jane) and Dean (Jody); his sister, Janet; and his brother-in-law, Darryl Frieburg. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Austyn (Indra), Madelyn (Noah), JT, Samuel, Sophie, Emily, Josephine, and Cameron; 3 great-grandchildren —all of whom were his pride and joy. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and many other family members.
A private family memorial will be held.
The family encourages memorials to be made to a local mental health service organization of your choice in his name.
Arrangements are by Methven Funeral and Cremation Services, Sandstone, Minnesota.
