Area teams take part in tune-up meets before regionals
Two prep track and field meets bookended the conference meets in the last two weeks. These were tune-ups not only the conference meets but also for this week's WIAA regional meets on Tuesday, May 26 and sectionals on May 29.
The Fall Creek boys won the DeJung Invitational in Cadott back on May 15. The Crickets edged Chippewa Falls McDonell and the host Hornets by a margin of 100-97-96. Koen Tumm had FC's lone title in the meet, winning the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, two inches. Other top three scorers for FCHS in the boys' meet were senior Ben Pilgrim, second in the 100-meter dash; sophomore Ira Mason, second in the 300-meter IM hurdles; the FC 3200-meter relay team, second; freshman Trey Winsand, second in the triple jump. senior Trevor Whittlinger, third in the shot put; Other Cricket athletes who scored points in the meet were senior Marcus Coleman, fourth in the 800-meter run and sixth in 400-meter dash; FC's 400-meter relay team, fourth; FC's 800-meter relay team, third; sophomore Logan Nyseth, fourth in the high jump; Winsand, junior Alex Anderson and senior Ian Jacobson, fourth through sixth in the pole vault; Winsand, fifth in the long jump; freshman Aiden Christianson, sixth in the triple jump; senior Ian Viring, sixth in the shot put, Whittlinger, fifth in the discus and senior Brennan Steinke, seventh in the discus.
The FC girls finished sixth in the 12-team meet with 63 points. Sophomore Lydia Sopiarz and junior Rylee Winsand finished 1-2 in the 100-meter high hurdles with Sopiarz's winning time :17.04 seconds. Winsand alsop finished third in the 300-meter low hurdles and senior Corina Grossinger finished second in the discus. Other Fall Creek athletes who scored in the meet were senior Rebecca Sturz, fourth in the 100; Winsand, fifth in the 200 and junior Madilyn Morneau eighth; junior Iris VanWormer, eighth in the 400; sophomore Emily Volbrecht, seventh in the 3200-meter run; freshman Audrey Heuer, sixth in the long jump; senior Jamie Johnston, fourth in the pole vault; Winsand and Heuer in the triple jump, 4-5 and Grossinger, eighth in the shot put.
The Walek Invitational took place Friday, May 21 in Whitehall. In the boys team standings, Eleva-Strum placed fifth, Osseo-Fairchild 11th and Augusta 14th in the 14-team meet. E-S's girls were seventh, Augusta eighth and O-F 11th. LaCrosse Logan swept the boys and girls team titles.
The E-S girls 3200-meter relay team of Annelyse Preston, Clara Christ, Lydia Nicolet and Callan Skoug won the meet title in 12:03. Other top three showings from Area athletes were as follows: E-S boys 3200 relay team, second; senior Dylan Fritz of Osseo-Fairchild, third in the 100; Augusta's Viola MacDonald, third in the 100 high hurdles; Augusta's Zale Pettis, third in the 1600; Augusta girls 800-meter relay team, third; O-F boys 400 relay, third; Central's Bo Windjue, second in the 300-meter IM hurdles and third in the high jump; the Thunder's Naomi Hoffman, third in the 200 and third in the long jump; E-S's Russell Hulett, second in the triple jump and third in the long jump; O-F's Alyssa Burmesch, second in the 3200-meter run; Eleva-Strum girls 1600 relay team, third; E-S's Jaxon Rindal second in the discus with a new school record of 151-10 and Augusta's Zoey Guntner, third in the high jump.
Other points scored in the meet by Area athletes were from O-F's Ty Hanson, fifth in the triple jump and eighth in the long jump; E-S's Lydia Nicolet, eighth in the triple jump; O-F's Maddox Abramczak, fifth in the long jump and seventh in the high jump; Skoug and her Eleva-Strum teammate Aliza Kulig, 4-5 in the high jump with Osseo-Fairchild's Jianna Scheffer eighth in the same event; O-F's Makalea Kiesow, seventh in the discus; Preston, eighth in the discus; E-S boys 1600 relay, fifth; George Clark, Osseo-Fairchild, seventh in the 3200; Augusta's Dasan Downey, eighth in 3200 run; Pettis, eighth in the 200; AHS's Stephanie Bergman, sixth in the 200 and E-S's Tatum Koxlien, seventh; E-S's Brock Stendahl, seventh in the 800; E-S's Axel Young and Gabe Wakefield, 4th and 7th in the 300 hurdles; E-S's Evelyn Barneson, seventh in the girls 300 hurdles; MacDonald, fourth in the 300 hurdles; E-S in the boys 400 relay, sixth; E-S and O-F in the girls 400 relay, fourth and fifth respectively; the Beavers Kinley Nelson and Stephanie Bergman, 5-6 in the 400; E-S boys, sixth in the 800 relay while the Cardinal girls finished fourth in the same event; Nelson and Hoffman, 5-6 in the girls' 100; Kulig, fifth in the 100 hurdles; Windjue, fifth in the 110 hurdles and O-F's Jason Sedillo, eighth in the 110 hurdles.
All four Area teams will compete in the WIAA Division 3 Mondovi Regional Tuesday, May 26 beginning at 4 p.m. The top four advance to the D-3 Bangor Sectional on Friday, May 29 where the top four advance to state. Also competing in Mondovi is Lincoln, Durand-Arkansaw, Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran, Eau Clai9re Regis, Elmwood/Plum City, Spring Valley, Whitehall and the host Buffaloes.
