Dragon wrestlers get ready for regionals after last weekend's conference meet

The competition will again be tough for the Osseo-Fairchild/Augusta/Fall Creek Tri-County Area prep wrestling cooperative team as it prepares for the WIAA Division 2 Arcadia Regional Meet this Saturday, Feb. 12 beginning at 10 a.m.

While No. 12 Ellsworth was the only ranked opponent at the meet, the Dragons will compete in a meet with several solid squads and good wrestlers from the host school along with Black River Falls, Prescott, defending team champion Melrose-Mindoro/Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau and West Salem/Bangor. Top two wrestlers in each weight class will advance to next weekend's individual sectional meet in Amery while the top team advances to the team sectional meet Tuesday at Somerset.

Top-ranked and honorable mention receiving wrestlers in this regional tournament field include Ellsworth sophomore Carson Wright and Prescott junior Benny Olson at 106 pounds; sophomore Brett Plomedahl of West Salem/Bangor at 113; sophomore William Penn of Ellsworth at 120; senior Alex Iberg of Prescott and sophomore Jackson Blaken of Mel-Min/G-E-T at 126; No. 3 ranked senior Tanner Anderson of Mel-Min./G-E-T at 132; junior No. 4 ranked Evan Wolfe of West Salem/Bangor and No. 10 ranked senior Jackson McCormick of Black River Falls at 138; senior No. 8 ranked Sam Murphy of Prescott at 152; No. 10 ranked senior Ivan Veenendall of Ellsworth at 160; No. 12 ranked Hunter Breaker of Osseo-Fairchild/Augusta/Fall Creek at 170; senior No. 12 ranked Teag Panzer of Prescott at 182; senior Justice Vaaler of Mel-Min./G-E-T at 195; No. 7 ranked sophomore Braydn Lockington of Mel-Min/G-E-T at 220.

This leaves open opportunities for OFAFC wrestlers to qualify in weight classes like 113 for Bryce Armstrong-Baglien; 182 for Kaden Mosely and heavyweight for Isaiah Waggoner. Dragon wrestler Cayden Gunter certainly has a shot as he finished second in the equally tough and competitive Cloverbelt Conference meet last weekend, Feb. 5 in Cadott.

Gunter placed second at 106 pounds and currently has a 31-11 overall record while Armstrong-Baglien also took second at 113. He's 22-13 overall. Breaker, 29-12 overall, finished third at 160, defeating Garrett Learman of Neillsville/Loyal/Greenwood with a 1:48 pinfall. Breaker could wrestler at 160 or 170 depending on the best path for him to the sectional meet. Moseley, 19-17 overall, also took third, pinning Spencer/Marshfield Columbus's Carson Kilty in :55 seconds at 182.

The Dragons placed seventh as a team scoring 85 points, just 17 points out of fourth place with just six wrestlers and were without Waggoner who will be back in the line-up this weekend. No. 5 ranked Cadott successfully defended their conference title with 232 points to No. 11 ranked Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal's 192 and Eau Claire Regis/Altoona's 176.

OFAFC's Breanna Wier, who competed in the girls' state tournament two weekend's ago at 152, by WIAA rule her season is complete.
