Eleva-Strum spikers get in position for late-season run

Tri-County Area Prep Volleyball Review

As the WIAA playoffs approach, Tri-Country Area prep volleyball teams are doing their darndest to prepare themselves and play at their best, with varying degrees of successful and not-quite-so-successful efforts last week.

Eleva-Strum had the best showing of the Area's teams as they won twice in Dairyland Conference action to secure a winning record in the DC this season. The Cardinals won at home vs. Whitehall, their Homecoming match on Tuesday, Oct. 3, by a 3-1 score, notching their first league win this season against a team ahead of them in the conference standings. E-S followed this up with a 3-1 win at Melrose-Mindoro on Thursday, Oct. 5 to improve to 5-3 in the league and 11-14 overall. After struggling in their own invite meet going 2-3, Central, 11-14 overall, is on a four-match winning streak. They close their regular season this Thursday, Oct. 12 at home vs. Lincoln with the match beginning at 7:15 p.m.

Fall Creek, 28-13 overall, split last week, winning at Thorp on Tuesday 3-0 ( 25-17, 25-13, 25-14) before watching No. 3 ranked Chippewa Falls McDonell clinched the Western Cloverbelt Conference title on their home floor on Thursday with a 3-0 sweep (25-13, 25-20, 25-16). Against the Cardinals, FC was led by Caroline Grossinger 's10 kills, Kambel Sell's six kills and three blocks, Lauren Dallas' 18 assists and four aces, Grace Herrem's six aces and Anna Dougherty's 18 digs and three aces. Versus the Macks, the Crickets' Gracie Marten had 11 kills and 12 digs; Herrem 16 digs and two aces; Dallas' 11 assists; Dougherty's 11 digs; Grossinger's six kills and Sell's three blocks.

Osseo-Fairchild used their invitational meet they hosted last week Saturday, Oct. 7, to pick up some wins. The Thunder finished fourth in the six-team field with a 2-3 record. Durand-Arkansaw was the invite winner with a perfect 5-0 record. O-F, 10-18 overall,. also closed out WCC play for the season last week with a 3-0 loss at home Tuesday to No. 8 ranked Bloomer and a close 3-2 loss at Stanley-Boyd Thursday.

Augusta's overall record dropped to 2-16 as they lost in Dairyland Conference action last week Tuesday to a red-hot Alma/Pepin squad also making a late-season push (the Eagles have won three straight DC matches plus went 3-2 in the Osseo-Fairchild Invitational) and to Cochrane-Fountain City on Thursday at home, both by 3-0 scores.

Speaking of tournaments, pairings for the WIAA regional tournaments have been officially released. Fall Creek is a No. 2 seed in its Division 3 Barron Sectional half-bracket (McDonell is the No. 1 seed) and will play the winner of the Durand-Arkansaw/Whitehall match in the semifinals Thursday, Oct. 19 after a first-round bye. Playing first-round matches on Tuesday, Oct. 17 are No. 12 seed Osseo-Fairchild at No. 5 seed Eau Claire Regis and No. 14 seed Augusta at No. 3 seed Cadott. In Division 4, Eleva-Strum is a No. 10 seed in the Cashton Sectional half-bracket and will play in the first round at No. 7 seed Pittsville.
