Prep regional tournament wrestling this weekend, first for girls

Tri-County Area Prep Wrestling Review and Preview

For the first time the WIAA wrestling tournament series for girls features regional competition which begins this evening Friday, Feb. 14 at Holmen beginning at 5 p.m.

There are 19 schools with entries in the one-class, regional tournament including both Osseo-Fairchild/Augusta/Fall Creek Tri-County prep wrestling co-op and the Mondovi/Eleva-Strum co-op. OFAFC senior wrestler Aaliyah Zamora will look to get back to the state tournament she qualified for as a sophomore. Last week Zamora picked two wins, including a pin in the final Dairyland Duals at Whitehall on Thursday, Feb. 6. Zamora will enter the regional with a 36-13 record compiled against both boys and girls (25-7 vs. girls) and won the Barron Invitational back in December while finishing in the top five of several meets. She also has a school-record 23 pins this season as well.

MES will enter several wrestlers in the regional tournament, including their top chances to finish in the top four and advance to the sectional meet next week Friday, Feb. 21 at Eau Claire North beginning at 5 p.m. This includes freshman Layla Risler and junior Macy Tiegs.

This Saturday, Feb. 15 is the boys WIAA Division 2 Baldwin-Woodville regional meet beginning at 10 a.m. Both OFAFC and MES will be competing along with 11 other teams.

Wrestling against Indy/Gilmanton Dragon wrestler Henry Cash won by a pin while Sam Coach earned wins as well. Versus Whitehall, Easton Hansen won by pin and Cash came away victorious as well, finishing a perfect 4-0 in Dairyland Dual competition! He will have OFAFC's best shot of making the top four at the regional meet and advancing to the sectional next Saturday, Feb. 22 in Amery.

The MES boys wrestling team finished the regular season with a trip to Boyceville for a conference dual meet against the Bulldogs. The boys fought hard and there were some very exciting matches, but MES came up a little short, losing 41-30. Picking up wins by pin were Ian Berger at 157 pounds, Ethan Odegard at 175, and Alex Coffey at 190. AJ Loscheider won by forfeit at 150. Blaine Severson and Aiden Isaacson each won very exciting matches by decision in the upper weights. MES finished the dual meet portion of its 2024-25 schedule with a 9-16 overall record, 1-4 in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference.

These wrestlers: Berger, Odegard, Coffey, Loscheider, Severson and Isaacson will be MES' best opportunities to advance to the sectional meet.
