Prep cross country review and preview

OSSEO - The Osseo-Fairchild Invitational meet is this Thursday, Oct. 3 at Osseo Golf Course beginning at 4 p.m. Teams racing will be the Chippewa Valley - Lightning Bolts homeschool squad, Fall Creek, Mondovi, Cameron (ranked No. 15 in the state in boys, No. 9 in girls), Black River Falls, Augusta, Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran with its defending Dairyland Conference boys' team, Eau Claire Regis and Chippewa Falls McDonell.

Tri-County Area teams geared up for this meet with races over the past five days starting last week Thursday, Sept. 26. Eleva-Strum moved up its invite meet from usual October date to late September at Central to coincide with its Homecoming Week. The Cardinals' had two top-five finishers in the boys' and girls' races. Junior Russell Hulett came in second, trying as hard as he could on the warm September day to catch ECIL's Logan Thompson, one of the favorites to win the individual boys' race at the Osseo-Fairchild Invitational. Thompson won the race in a time of 18:26 on the 5000-meter course with Hulett's time 18:41. Thompson led his Lancer squad to the team title as well. Also running for the home team Cardinals were freshman Sam Gehrke, 17th in 22:19, junior Alex Awe, 26th in 24:40 and junior Gabe Wakefield, 30th in 30:04.

E-S's lone runner in the girls' race was senior Amalia Dyar. She had her best showing of the season so far with a fourth place run in 25:30. Black River Falls' Lily Miller won the girls' race in 22:30 and led BRF to the team title.

"That's not a PR for her but that's still a great time and finish to work towards that," Central head coach Martin Walter said. "And we're in a tough stretch of the season where teams have sometimes two races a week and are working hard to put in the miles to build towards conference and sectional meets."

Those will be coming up later in the month. Until then are tough races like the Durand-Arkansaw Invitational, also held last week Thursday, Sept. 27 on the tough Rolling Greens Golf Course 5000-meter course. Fall Creek was there and sophomore Audrey Koehler had the Crickets' best finish in sixth in a time of 22:18 on the 5000-meter course.
