Wins keep on rolling in for Tri-County Area teams

Tri-County Area Prep Girls Basketball Review and Preview

The wins keeping on coming in for Tri-County Area prep girls basketball teams

And its not just Eleva-Strum.

The No. 1 ranked Cardinals are still racking up the W's, improving to now 19-0 overall after winning three games in a week's time, from Tuesday, Jan. 27 to Tuesday, Feb. 3, clinching a tie for the Large Dairyland Conference title, their second in a row, at 15-0 in the standings. Their wins plus an upset loss by Independence/Gilmanton to Melrose-Mindoro helped them do so. Those wins were 74-36 at home over Cochrane-Fountain City on Thursday, Jan. 29, 58-41 at Whitehall on Saturday, Jan. 31 and 72-35 at home vs. Lincoln on Feb. 3.

The Bound Wisconsin/Zaleski Sports Girls Basketball Media Poll for Division 5 is as follows:

1). Eleva-Strum
2) Stevens Point Pacelli
3). Pecatonica/Argyle
4). Webster
5). Blair-Taylor
6). Marshfield Columbus
7). Lena
8). Almond-Bancroft
9). Wisconsin Rapids Assumption
10). Sheboygan Lutheran

Against C-FC (9-9), Avery Spangberg achieved her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 steals. Avery Glenz led the Cardinals' scoring with 13 points, followed closely by Maddea Brown and Avery Spangberg with 12 points each. Aliza Kulig scored 11 points, Clara Christ contributed nine, Avaya Zwiefelhofer added eight, Brenley Baier scored three, and Kora Gunderson, Lydia Nicolet, and Sydnee Hanner each scored two points. Versus Whitehall (5-13), Glenz's 21-point total helped the Redbirds fend off one of their closest challenges in several weeks as it was tied 28-28 at halftime and got her named WHTL: 102.3 FM Player of the Game. Brown finished with 16 points and Zwiefelhofer scored eight. Glenz and Zwiefelhofer each had nine rebounds and Brown had three assists. Spangberg won the WHTL Player of the Game award in the Cards win over Lincoln (9-9), not for scoring as she had only four points but for the great defense she put forth, especially in the second half as E-S outscored the Hornets 52-23. She also had a team-leading five assists. Glenz had 20 points, Bauer had a season-best 16 points and nine rebounds and Zwiefelhofer had 17 points and six boards. E-S will look to keep their winning streak going at Alma/Pepin (10-8) Thursday, Feb. 5 in Pepin and at Augusta on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 7:15 p.m.

Talk about a turnaround. Fall Creek was upended by Cadott (7-9) at home last week Tuesday, Jan. 27 by a 49-46 score. But after recovering at home vs. Thorp (1-17) on Thursday, Jan. 30 by a 63-29 victory, FC pulled off a shocker over then No. 5 ranked La Crosse Central (14-4) on the road Saturday, Jan. 31, winning 66-53 led by Jasmin Heuer's 18 points and showed what a healthy Cricket team could have been. FC looked to keep their winning streak against ranked teams going at No. 2 Neillsville in a rescheduled contest in Neillsville (16-1). Despite leading leading at halftime, the 10-9 Crickets fell to the Warriors 56-39. FC is at Bloomer (11-6) Thursday, Feb. 5 and at No. 3 Eau Claire Regis (17-2) next Tuesday, Feb. 10.

Augusta has doubled its win total from last season, improving to 6-12 after winning three out of its last four ballgames, the only loss being a close 58-51 contest at Cochrane-Fountain City on Saturday, Jan. 31. This is the same C-FC team which upset No. 5 Blair-Taylor on Tuesday,

Last week the Beavers topped Alma/Pepin at home on Thursday, Jan. 29 by a 67-63 score. On Tuesday, Feb. 3, AHS downed Whitehall, also at home, 62-59. The schedule, unfortunately, gets busier and tougher heading into next week. The Beavers still have opportunities for more wins this Friday, Feb,. 6 at Lincoln, next Monday, Feb. 9 at Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran and then Eleva-Strum looms at home on Tuesday, Feb. 10 although it should be pointed out Augusta led in halftime in their first meeting back in December before E-S pulled away in the second half. Augusta then travel to Cadott for a non-conference contest on Thursday, Feb. 12 and then Blair-Taylor (14-5) on the 16th.

Osseo-Fairchild's last three contests had them losing at home to Independence/Gilmanton (14-5) 73-34 on Thursday, Jan. 29, losing at Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran 47-19 on Saturday, Jan. 31 and losing at home to Alma/Pepin on Tuesday, Feb. 3 by a 57-31 score. Against the Lancers (10-7), freshman Addison Dunahay led O-F with six points while junior Noelle Kiesow scored four points and senior Makaela Kiesow had three points. As much as the Thunder struggled on offense, not scoring a field goal until the 4:20 mark of the first half, they at least played defense well enough to keep the contest from being a complete runaway. O-F has a make-up contest at Melrose-Mindoro (9-9) on Thursday, Feb. 5 and plays at Cochrane-Fountain City on Friday, Feb. 6 before hosting Whitehall on Feb. 10.
