Dennis Clair Hammel

Dennis Clair Hammel passed away peacefully surrounded by his children on April 12, 2023, at Gundersen Medical Center in La Crosse, WI. Dennis was born on February 19, 1954, in Plum City, WI to Clair and Olive (Glaus) Hammel. He was the youngest of five children.
He attended St. John’s Catholic School and Plum City High School. After graduation, Dennis worked many construction-based jobs both locally and as far as the Twin
Cities. He retired out of the MN Construction Laborer’s Union.
Dennis also devoted himself to the family farm, assisting his parents over several years.
During this time, he met Cindy Anderson (Erickson) whom he would marry, create a home in Pepin, WI and have two children, Nicole Evers of Pepin, WI and Brandon Hammel of Plum City, WI.
Dennis most often could be found outside. He was a man who couldn’t sit still whether it be gardening, mowing, farming of any sort, going to auctions, working on or restoring machinery and other projects.
He loved history, new places, meeting new people, getting to know them and their story.
Then one day, and over the course of ten years, entered the six main priorities of his life-his grandchildren. Dennis loved to see and talk with each of them almost every other day.
He loved to ring treats, trinkets, even an animal he rescued or a new puppy, just to see the joy in their eyes.
Dennis’ best advice in life was to live and he never stopped planning to live. Dennis endured health issues that tested his faith, resiliency, and strength and yet he persevered.
His children stood in amazement of him especially over the last three years. He took matters into his own hands and stayed with us as long as he could.
Dennis is survived by his daughter Nicole and son Brandon. Son-in-law Troy Evers and daughter-in-law Jennifer Hammel (Hamlin). His grandchildren Jaden, Rigen, Taten and Cashten Evers, Bentley and Miley Hammel. Along with siblings Paul Hammel, Colleen Hoffman, Phyllis Miller and Patsy Chilson. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.
A funeral mass will be held at 11am on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Plum City, WI with lunch to follow at the Evers’ home - W10828 State Hwy 35, Pepin, WI. Friends and family may also gather at the church one hour prior to the mass. The family extends heart felt thank you, gratitude, and love to all those who shared compassion, support, and care to Dennis over his life.
