Donald W. ‘Don’ Schurhammer, 83, Kellogg

Donald W. “Don” Schurhammer, age 83, of Kellogg, died Sunday, May 17, 2015, at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Wabasha. He was born July 2, 1931, on the family farm on Sand Prairie near Wabasha, the son of Valentine and Lorraine (Braun) Schurhammer Sr. He was the salutatorian of his Kellogg High School 1949 graduating class. He enlisted in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1952-1956, serving in Guam and at Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, AZ. After discharge he returned to the area. He then attended Winona Business School, concentrating on accounting. In 1959 he began his career with the railroad on the Milwaukee Road, which later became the Soo Line Railroad, retiring in 1993. In retirement he worked as a seasonal employee of Progressive Ag of Plainview in Kellogg for over 10 years. He was united in marriage to Laura Lindmark July 15, 1952, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Kellogg. The family lived in Glendale, AZ, and Winona .Since 1960 they have lived in Kellogg.
Don was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church. He was also a 53- year member of the Kellogg American Legion Post #546, a life member of the Burkhardt-Roemer VFW Post #4086 in Wabasha and a 20- year member of the Kellogg Lions Club. In his younger years he was an accomplished baseball and basketball player. He was a member of the champion Kellogg City baseball team and a member of the Kellogg City basketball team. He enjoyed reading the newspapers, bird watching, and following all sports, especially baseball. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Laura Schurhammer, Kellogg, MN; daughters and sons-in-law, Diane Schurhammer and Richard Anderson, Prescott, AZ; Karen and Steve Arens, Kellogg, MN; Susan and Steve Duncan, Elgin, MN; son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Diane Schurhammer, Lake City, MN; nine grandchildren, Kelly (Nathan) Cupp, Anthem, AZ; Brenda (Sam) Passe, Rochester, MN; Adam (Rebecca) Arens, St. Charles, MN; Brad (Andrea) Arens, Mazeppa, MN; Greg (Kathy) Sheehan, Theilman, MN; Marie Sheehan and Dan Sheehan, both of Rochester, MN; Parker and Brady Schurhammer, both of Lake City, MN; nine great-grandchildren, Rhianna, Riley, Adriana, Anna, Caleb, Thomas, Kenzie, Dylan and Kayla; sisters-in-law, Lucille Schurhammer, Kellogg, MN; Gertrude Schurhammer, Wabasha, MN; brother-in-law, Carl (Judy) Lindmark, Kellogg, MN; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Valentine and Lorraine Schurhammer, Sr., sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Arnie Greden, brothers, Robert “Gene” Schurhammer, Valentine Schurhammer, Jr., and Don’s twin brother and sister-in-law Dean and Bertha Schurhammer.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 11:00am at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Kellogg with the Reverend Monsignor Robert Meyer officiating. Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the Kellogg and Wabasha American Legion Posts and the Burkhardt-Roemer VFW Post of Wabasha. Casket bearers will be his nine grandchildren. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4-8pm with a prayer service at 8pm and they may call at the church on Thursday one hour before the service.
