Karen Riess, 74

Ms. Riess, 74, passed away with her family by her side Sunday evening, April 14th, 2019 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN.
Ms. Riess was born April 5th, 1945. She was the eldest of six children born to Lawrence and Vera Lyons. Ms. Riess graduated from Plainview High School, MN in 1963. Following graduation, she moved to Rochester where she was employed by First Federal Bank. On October 1st, 1966, she married Darrell E. Riess at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Plainview, MN. In 1971 they started their family by adopting their son, Chad and daughter, Starr through Catholic Charities, which led them to becoming infant foster parents for the charity. Following her years of being a full time mother and homemaker she re-entered the work force as an Executive Administrative Assistant for the Rochester Area Foundation. She furthered her education earning an Associate in Arts Degree from Rochester Community College.
Karen will be missed by her two children, son, Chad (Dawn) D. Riess of Loveland, CO, and daughter, Starr (Bonn) E. Heller of Rochester, MN. Other survivors include grandchildren, Taylor (Jordan Hanson) M. Riess, Byron, MN, Jacob D. Riess, Springfield, MO, Grant (fiancée Mikayla Eischen) M. Heller, Rochester, MN, Grace E. Heller, Rochester, MN, Dustin Meyer, Rochester, MN, Brooke (Nick) Sikkink, Rochester, MN, Drew (fiancée Cora Sandow) Meyer, Twin Cities; brothers, Bob (Jean) Lyons, Plainview, MN, Ken Lyons, Lake City, MN, Don (girlfriend Shelly Carlson) Lyons, Faribault, MN; sisters, Jan (Lyle) Peters, Lake City, MN, and Barb Dickerman, Lino Lake, MN.
Karen is preceded in death by her parents; loving husband, Darrell; and nephews, David Riess and Brenden Lyons.
Karen enjoyed participating in many organizations including serving as Coordinator/Fundraiser for the Star of the North Games, President of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post 92, treasurer for St. Francis Catholic Church, volunteer for Zumbro Valley Mental Health Services, and President of Century Hills Court Townhome Association. Along with her devout faith in the Lord, Karen found joy in being a grandmother, gardening, bee charming and knitting. She will be remembered for her infectious laugh, fun loving banter and her strong sense of civic and patriotic pride.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Karen Anne Riess will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 23rd at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church (1114 3rd St. SE, Rochester, MN) with Rev. James Berning officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, April 22nd in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home (1105 12th St. SE, Rochester, MN) and one hour prior to the Mass at the church on Tuesday.
