Sylvia L. (Rouleau) Martin

Sylvia passed away on January 8th, 2025 at Ashley Square Assisted Living in Greenwood, SC with her daughter Leslie at her side. She was born on November 1st, 1935 in Springfield, Massachusetts, the eldest child of Yvonne M. (Beauregard) and Leo J. Rouleau. She spent the first nine years of her life in Springfield, which she described as the happiest time of her life. She played with her brother Norman and all her aunts and uncles lived nearby. In 1944 her family moved to Winchendon, MA where her father owned and operated Rouleau's "Ye Hidden Palace" with the best brew on tap and live entertainment. After graduating high school, Sylvia worked as a medical laboratory assistant for several years while her husband completed his medical school training. They lived briefly in New Haven, CT, Otter River, MA, Brighton, MA and Omaha, NE. In 1963 the Martin family moved to Wabasha, MN where they lived for 21 years. Besides raising her four children, Sylvia operated Kathryn's clothing store for a couple of years and worked in Rochester as a medical records secretary. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and long walks with her dogs exploring nature. She moved away from Wabasha in 1984 when her husband changed jobs. She lived briefly in Warrenton, VA and York, SC before moving to Abbeville, SC. After a few years, she struck out on her own, renting houses in the mountains near Big Bear Lake, CA and then near the ocean in Folly Beach, SC. She owned a home in Donalds, SC before moving to Makaha, HI for five years. She later returned to Abbeville where she bought a home in 2008 which she truly loved. She planted beautiful flowers and bushes all around it and enjoyed the beautiful view off her enclosed patio and deck with her cats Skyler and Skittles. She worked as a bookkeeper and cashier for Abbeville Body Shop into her 80's. She was a devout member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Abbeville. She was predeceased by her parents, Yvonne and Leo Rouleau, her brother Norman Rouleau, and sister Joyce Perry. She is survived by her four children Elizabeth Martin, Leslie (Ted) Elliott, Sharron(- Jon) Porter and David Martin, grandchildren Tristan Porter and Mariah Martin Paxton,and great grandchildren Claire Porter and Noah Porter. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, and cousins. A graveside memorial service will be held for Sylvia at St. Michael's Cemetery in Springfield, MA in May 2025.
