Thomas M. ‘Tom’ Ireland, 88, Wabasha

Thomas M. ‘Tom’ Ireland, age 88, of Wabasha, died late Sunday, October 29. 2017 at St. Elizabeth’s Nursing Home in Wabasha. He was born April 4, 1929 in St. Paul, the son of Raymond and Claire (Loveland) Ireland. He graduated from high school in St. Paul in 1947. Tom worked at Amour Meatpacking in South St. Paul from 1950-1968 when he began working for the Milwaukee Railroad. He retired in 1980. He married Elizabeth Selby May 26, 1950 at Central Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. The family lived in the Afton area until moving to Wabasha in 1971.
In Wabasha after his retirement Tom was a driver for the Head Start Program and Hiawathaland Transit and he assisted his wife in her work with the Three Rivers Community Action Council. Elizabeth died January 18, 2009.
Tom was a member of the Wabasha United Church of Christ. He was also very involved with the Masonic Lodge as a member of the Wabasha and Lake City Chapters. Tom was a 3rd degree Mason, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite and active in the Shrine and the Rochester Dragon Patrol of which he served as president in 1993. He was named Dragon of the Year in 2002. He was also active in the Eastern Star in Wabasha and Lake City. While living in the Afton area he was a member of the Afton Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed model trains and playing cribbage. His greatest joy was spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by son and daughters-in-law, Jim and Karen Ireland, Reads Landing, MN; Karen Ireland, Roseville, MN; daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Jim Burrichter, Port Charlotte, FL; Barb Hanson, Wabasha, MN; John Eversman, Kellogg, MN; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; brother and sister-in-law, Don and Kathleen Ireland, Farmington, NM; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth, son, Tom Ireland, daughter, Mary Eversman, grandson, Tony Burrichter, two great-grandsons, Wyatt and Danny Petersen, son-in-law, John Hanson, parents, Raymond and Claire, brother, Russell and sister, Shirley.
A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at a later date at the Wabasha United Church of Christ. Interment will be at St. Felix Cemetery in Wabasha. The Abbott Funeral Home of Wabasha is in charge of arrangements. www.abbottfh.com
