William Donald Fiedler, 79, Wabasha

William Donald Fiedler, 79, of Wabasha, Minnesota passed away on Friday, June 26, 2015 surrounded by his family. He was reunited with Ann, his wife of 56 years who had also recently passed.
Bill was born in 1936 in Trempealeau, WI. He was one of three children born to Herschel and Marion Fiedler. In 1941, they moved to Bremerton, WA where Herschel worked in the shipyards. Following the end of World War II, the family returned to Trempealeau where Bill completed high school and college at Winona State University. After graduating from college, he was united in marriage to Ann Nichols and began his teaching career in Tyler, MN. After one year of teaching, he enlisted in the U.S. Army during which time he served at Forts Riley, Gordon and Huachuca specializing in radio operations and performing as a percussionist in the Army band. Upon his honorable discharge from active service, Bill resumed his teaching career in Tyler. In 1964 the family moved to Wabasha, MN where Bill completed his Master’s degree at Winona State University and dedicated nearly 30 years as a Science teacher in the Wabasha-Kellogg School district.
Aside from his career in teaching, Bill was very active in the Army Reserve, performing as a drummer in various local bands and in his later years, building balsa wood airplanes, many of which are displayed in the Wabasha Burkhardt-Roemer VFW Post. Teaching was his great passion and over the course of his 30+ years in the classroom, he inspired countless kids to pursue a career in the sciences.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Ann, his parents, his brother, Allen and his infant sister, Nancy. He is survived by his five children: David (Kim) and their children, Teegan (Sarah), Hannah, Danaca, Kyrie, Torian and Haakon, Chicago, IL, Dennis (Joyce) and their children Jake, Grace and Eleanor, Minnetonka, MN, Danaca (Don) Carr and their children, Josh (Lindsey), Kelsey and Anna, Wabasha, MN, Dean (Tammy) and their children, Brady and Makenzie, Lake City, MN, Denae (Dan) Juntunen and their children, Allie and Nick, Sartell, MN.
Bill will be greatly missed by his family, friends and those who anticipated “Bill’s question of the day”. In light of his commitment to knowledge and education, Bill wanted to create a scholarship for students pursuing a career in the sciences. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Bill Fiedler Scholarship Fund c/o Danaca Carr, 14412 659th Street, Wabasha, MN 55981.
A celebration of the lives of Bill and Ann Fiedler will be held at a later date. The Abbott Funeral Home of Wabasha is in charge of arrangements.
