Cardinals girls basketball downs a pair of tough losses

by Doug Sands

The Eleva-Strum Cardinals girls team took some bitter medicine this week as they swallowed a pair of painful losses from Durand and Immanuel Lutheran.

On Dec. 9, the Cardinals hosted the Durand team for a game that promised to be intense: the non-conference Panthers were undefeated with a 4-0 season record.

The Cards came to the court ready to play in the first quarter, but the Panthers blew them out of the water. By the time the second quarter rolled around, the Cardinals were struggling under a 15-point deficit. Eleva-Strum didn’t give in. They stepped up their defense, slowing the Panthers down.

Still, Durand led the Cardinals 30-10 by halftime. Eleva-Strum stepped up their effort coming out of the half, racking up six points, but Durand pummeled them back. Down 29 points entering the fourth, the Cardinals put up a valiant effort, but their work couldn’t undo what the Panthers had done. Durand took the game 58-20.

Leading the Cardinals for 2-pointers was Josie Olson, putting up three. Just behind Olson were Alexis McDonald with two, and Jenna Booth and Lauren Jaskowski, both with one. As a team, the Cardinals were 33 percent successful on their 2-point record. Greta Monson attempted two 3-pointers in the game, but both were unsuccessful, leaving the Cardinals without any 3-point scores in the match. Alexis McDonald went 3-3 on free throws, with Abby Palkowski contributing two and Anna Schoen adding one.

Two days later, the Cardinals faced off with 3-1 team Immanuel Lutheran. Eleva-Strum took a heavy blow in the first quarter as the Lancers’ defense kept them on lockdown. The Cards fought to earn their two points in the first quarter. The second quarter gave E-S an opportunity to build momentum. By halftime, the Cardinals, though still behind, had a sturdy 15-point base to work off of when entering the second half. But like a returning prize-fighter, the Lancers’ defense kicked in strong again in the third, holding the Cardinals to six points.

E-S finally broke free and made some headway in the fourth quarter, but by then the Lancers had all but pulled away. The Cardinals fell to Immanuel Lutheran 51-36.

McDonald and Palkowski tied for the lead on 2-pointers, each with five. Olson had three and Booth two. The Cardinals improved their 2-point ratio, earning a 39 percent success rate, though Palkowski carried the column with an impressive 71 percent success rate. Greta Monson put up a single 3-pointer for the night. Leading the scoreboard with 10 points apiece were McDonald and Palkowski, followed by Olson with six.

The Cardinals next travel to Independence to take on the Indees in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off on Friday, Dec. 19.
