Fall Creek girls on a roll

Crickets knock down Orioles, Cardinals

by Bridget Cooke

Celebrating an undefeated season, the Crickets girls team hosted Stanley-Boyd Tuesday, Dec. 9 to happy results as they were victorious over the conference opponents 64-45 on their home court before traveling to Thorp Friday, Dec. 12 with similar results.

Dominating play throughout the match up, the Crickets held steady against the Orioles to positive results. The first half garnered a 28-19 lead over the visitors and as the two teams took to the floor once more after the break it was smooth sailing for Fall Creek.

While Stanley-Boyd junior Jamie Reit posted 20 total points of the team’s 45 total with a successful 3-point shot and maintaining a 5-7 record from the foul line, the Crickets posted a more evenly rounded assortment of shots from several talents throughout the team.

Fall Creek senior Tatum Mayenschein put up 15 total points against Stanley-Boyd while teammate Whitney Folkers added 14 of her own, with senior Jonalyn Wittwer sinking 12 to add to the total 64 points on the Crickets’ side. Junior Olivia Burghardt had eight of her own to add to the mix.

On Friday, Thorp played host as the team with no losses took the court against the Cardinals.

This time it was Wittwer taking the claim as the top scorer with 17 points for the Crickets to top the home team 52-37. Mayenschein followed closely as a strong presence under the hoop with 15 of her own.

Fall Creek took the court and quickly doubled Thorp’s score by the end of the first quarter. Cutting it a bit closer in the second period of play, the Crickets held a small lead 24-18 over the Cardinals going into halftime.

However, in the second half it was an explosive back and forth that left Thorp in the dust as the Crickets put in successful shots, one after the other, to make it a 12-point lead before crushing their opponents in the final quarter.

Folkers followed her teammates with seven points of her own against the Cardinals.

With their win over Thorp, the Crickets have held fast to a 4-0 lead in the West Cloverbelt Conference, tied with Regis’ record for the 2014-15 season. Next, Fall Creek hosts conference opponents Osseo-Fairchild (2-2) at home Thursday with a tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
