Effectiveness focus of teachers shifted to teach for growth

On Monday, the Osseo-Fairchild School Board met at the Fairchild Elementary library to discuss upcoming events as well as their plans to implement the Educator Effectiveness system successfully.

The administration, including Superintendent Bill Tourdot, Middle/High School Principal Drew Semingson, Elementary School Principal Lori Whelan and Jack Wagener--who aided in the process and has been a resource for educators trying to do better within the system--outlined how educator effectiveness functions as a way for students to gain more from their time spent in the classroom instead of falling behind their peers.

Wagener noted O-F is not only doing comparably well or better to area schools instituting the program, but it is also harboring a “phenomenal staff” up to the task of bettering the environment, and encouraging growth, for students.

The Educator Effectiveness System is a way in which teachers can transform the learning process. Instead of settling with excuses for why certain students are adapting to a subject slower than others, it works to connect with children in a way which engages them. The focus is a movement to grading for learning, and Wagener said the willingness of the staff to flexibly transition. An evaluation process requires extensive monitoring guided by both teacher and specialist standards.

Throughout the focus, members of the board were shown an example of the website database, which houses the projects and requirements for teachers to post and keep track of through communication with administrators.

Semingson said he was impressed by goals he had seen so far in addition to the excitement of teachers who have gotten involved and are working toward even more organization.

Heavy conversation focused on the hope of more teamwork-oriented teaching instead of a competitive atmosphere, which will help educators institute the best from others and give them a chance to more freely share ideas and plans. The system is an accompaniment to initiatives already put in place for schools and is a hopeful addition to aiding in the alleviation of anxiety for teachers unsure of the extra workload.

Tourot mentioned the recently passed referendum, highlighting the numbers from the result. He noted it was a show of support by the community before a member of the board moved to include the results to the minutes of the meeting. Net, there will b plans put in place to utilize the funds and begin work on the facilities.

Another item was the first reading of the two pieces put in place for alternative diploma options, one part being the shift from noting a student’s shortcomings in the program at the graduating ceremony while still letting them walk with their class.

The board also outlined changes to the athletic code in an effort to make the punishments for conduct unbecoming of an athlete more concise, with less room for a subjective decision.

Other items addressed:

  • Approval of early graduation request upon completion of fall semester credits

  • Approval of FBLA trip to NYC with date change, thee first day of travel being the final day of the 2014-2015 school year

  • Custodian resignation approved
