O-F boys take hard hit on the road against McDonell

by Bridget Cooke

On Thursday, Dec. 11, the Thunder boys basketball team traveled to Chippewa Falls to take on the Macks in conference play to less than desired results.

The 0-2 Thunder were looking to have their first win in conference competition but were stopped short by an active McDonell scoring squad, who were eager to take over O-F once they spotted any weaknesses.

Play at the beginning benefited the Thunder by a small margin, but the 1-point lead didn’t last long as the Macks pounced onto O-F and outscored them 19-9 before halftime. Coming out of the break, the Thunder had something to prove, and down by 32-23, they made a point, gaining a small bit of ground with only a 7-point deficit.

However, it was all over as the Macks sped past the Thunder in the final minutes of the game, outscoring them 20-12 and posting a 63-48 win to boost their conference record.

Cal Freitag was the high scorer for the Thunder with 13 points, though hardly stood a chance against McDonell Central junior Ben Retzlaff, who posted 24 alongside a teammate’s 11. Senior Kyler Hagen followed closely with 12, though no other O-F player posted double-digits against the Macks, Lucas Eide following his teammates with seven.

The Thunder boys faced off against Altoona Tuesday night and are next set to take on Thorp (0-2) in a game on the road Friday, Dec. 19 with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off scheduled.
