After 31 years, Dave & Sally's Hide-A-While Bar changing hands

I've made lots of friends here," she said. "They're like family to me."

In 1960, a schoolhouse outside of Rock Falls closed up, and reopened as a bar in 1963 under the ownership of Vern and Leone Anibas.

In 1974, Lee and Janie Klocke took over, until it was passed on to Dave and Sally Steinke on September 1, 1983.

For the last 31 years, Dave & Sally's Hide-A-While Bar has been offering a variety of reasons to stop in.

"It's been a very good life, and I have a lot of wonderful memories over the years," Steinke said.

For 10 years prior to taking over the bar, Steinke said she had tended bar.

"I love it," she said. "I've been behind a bar for 41 years. It's in my blood."

Steinke said her and her husband's families were in this area, which is what prompted them to move here and buy the bar from Dave's parents.

"I've made lots of friends here," she said. "They're like family to me."

Steinke said there are now customers coming in who are kids of some of her younger customers when she started out.

While most bars can be found in town, the Hide-A-While is a rural bar, located about 13 miles from Durand and Mondovi.

"It's a definite plus being in the country," Steinke said. "We have good food, and being between Durand, Eau Claire, and Mondovi, a lot of food goes out of here because people don't always want to drive into town."

Steinke said the Hide-A-While is a "Cheers" kind of bar.

"Everyone knows your name," she said.

Patrons are able to partake in a variety of activities, including volleyball league, horseshoe league, mens, womens, and "old farts" pool league, or the Junior Butler pool tournament that's held every March.

"The tournament started after Junior passed away," Steinke said. "We hold it every March, and it fills up immediately. He was a definite fixture here."

Steinke said the old farts pool league has been held for at least 25 years from September to April on Thursday nights. Participants must be 60 or over.

The Hide-A-While serves burgers and fries, appetizers, and pizza.

Steinke said she plans to move to Holcombe to retire. A retirement party is being held at the bar August 3, and Steinke said she welcomes patrons and friends to come wish her farewell.

New owners Chad and Becky Traun will take over on August 4.
