Angels on Wheels gets new date, events

Held this year in honor of all local children affected by Down syndrome, the fourth annual Angels on Wheels event is moving to a new date with a twist on former activities.

Set to take place this Saturday, June 6, at Henderson’s Silver Moon in Alma to benefit the Down Syndrome Association of Wisconsin, this year’s schedule includes a 5K Color Run and Classic Car Show in addition to grilled chicken dinners, a live auction, kids’ games and a cake walk.

Event organizer Sandy Glomski says the decision was made to move the fundraiser up from its traditional mid-August date in hopes of seeing a better turnout.

“I’m hoping earlier [in the summer] will be better,” she said, noting the month of August can get very busy for people.

A Classic Car Show will take place this year instead of the motorcycle ride of years past. Lack of participation in the motorcycle run dictated the need for a change, Glomski said.

Trophies will be awarded for the first, second and third place cars in the show. Registration is at 10 a.m. with a $20 entry fee. The show begins at 11 a.m.

The event will also build on a 5K fun run that was introduced last year with positive results.

With color run events becoming quite popular in recent years, Glomski thought moving to the 5K Color Run would encourage an even greater turnout.

Race registration begins at 7 a.m. that morning with a race start time set for 8 a.m.

Grilled chicken dinners will be available from 11:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. that day. Deejay entertainment by Rock N’ Roll To Go of Eau Claire will begin at 6 p.m. with a $5 cover charge. A live auction and family fun will also take place throughout the afternoon.
