The Mondovi Conservation Club has offered a free deer carcass drop-off site to area residents for the past three years. Donated deer hides help the club fund the program, but this year someone has made off with many of the hides valued at upwards of $600.

Local hunters typically donate dozens of deer hides each year to help offset the cost of a deer carcass drop-off site at the Mondovi Conservation Club that works to keep area roadsides clear.

However, club members recently discovered that the donated hides are being stolen this year, translating to about $500-$600 in lost funds for the program.

Conservation Club president Al Urness said the individual who picks up the donated hides was finding fewer and fewer inside the dumpster-like container while deer carcass numbers were increasing.

“We started monitoring it and we noticed he wasn’t getting any hides,” said Urness.

A trail camera was placed close to the drop-off site at the club, located on Youth Road just east of Mondovi, in hopes of shedding some light on the mystery. Then the camera was stolen, too, said Urness, essentially confirming that criminal activity was afoot.

The carcass drop site, now in its third year, provides hunters with a free option for proper deer carcass disposal in an effort to decrease the number of carcasses tossed in ditches around the county.

Urness says the club typically collects about 60-80 deer hides per year that help offset the cost of having the dumpsters on-site during hunting season. Far fewer hides have come in this year, putting the pinch on regular club funds to keep the program going.

“It’s getting to be a fairly large dollar amount of hides,” said Urness.

The Conservation Club is offering a $200 reward for information leading to the arrest of the individual(s) stealing the hides.

Official reports have been filed with the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department and the Mondovi Police Department.

Urness said the Conservation Club’s board hasn’t yet had a chance to formally discuss the issue, but adjustments for the program could be coming.

“Drastic changes” could be made, Urness said, but discontinuation is not likely to happen due to demand. Instead, the club could opt to come up with a more secure receptacle for donated deer hides to make stealing them much more difficult.

Those with any information relating to the stolen deer hides are encouraged to contact the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department at (608) 685-4433 or Al Urness at (715) 781-2517.
