Gilmanton-area woman receives free fuel through ‘Tanks of Thanks’ program

A local resident who regularly assists others in need recently received a special thank-you for her contributions to the area community.

Diane Ross of rural Mondovi has made regular trips to Eau Claire with her good friend and neighbor, Dean Balk, since he was diagnosed with Stage IV prostate cancer in January.

No one from Balk’s family was available to take him for his treatments, so Ross, who has assisted others with health struggles in the past, volunteered to pitch in.

“Somebody’s got to help him out,” reasoned Ross. “He’s been a good neighbor. You’ve got to do what you can to help people out.”

Balk even moved into the Ross home for three months during the thick of his treatment, during which Ross drove him to Eau Claire and back two or three times a week.

In light of her efforts, Ross’ daughter, Cheyenne King, nominated her mom in January for the “Tanks of Thanks” program.

Offered through Cenex, the program offers free fuel to reward people for their selfless contributions to their communities.

Ross says she was initially skeptical of the nomination and never gave it another thought until she received a notice in the mail along with a $50 gift card for Cenex fuel.

“We’ve always just done things to help,” said a modest Ross, noting it’s easy to want to give back to a guy like Balk.

“He’d give the shirt off his back,” she said.

Although Balk has returned to his own home, Ross still takes him to his doctor’s appointments once or twice a month. Some of those appointments can last several hours, as Balk is currently being treated for cancer that has metastasized in his bones and lymph nodes to help make him more comfortable.

Ross says she enjoys the time she spends with Balk chatting. He always treats her to lunch at McDonald’s after his appointments to thank her.

“He’s always fun to talk to,” commented Ross. “He’s got a mind like a steel trap.”

The “Tanks of Thanks” program from CHS and Cenex retailers encourages people to nominate friends, family and neighbors for free fuel as a way to say thank you for doing good in the community. Each month, CHS and Cenex retailers give away more than $5,000 in free fuel through the “Tanks of Thanks” program, according to a press release.

“There are people doing good things in every local community, and these acts of kindness do not go unnoticed or unappreciated,” commented Akhtar Hussain, CHS refined fuels brand marketing manager. “Congratulations to Diane Ross, and thank you for your contribution to the community.”

According to Hussain, “Tanks of Thanks” is a multi-year program, so there’s still plenty of time for others to nominate someone they know to receive free fuel.

“Nominating someone for ‘Tanks of Thanks’ is easy, and anyone can nominate or be nominated for any act of kindness—big or small.”

Since the program’s inception in 2012, “Tanks of Thanks” has recognized more than 12,000 people and given away more than $280,000 in free fuel.
