Lady Buffs defeated by Augusta

Hitting the road for the first time this season, the Mondovi girls basketball team headed to Augusta on Tuesday, Nov. 24, to fight out another non-conference game.
The Lady Buffs got off to a slow start in the first half. The Lady Buffs’ defense had a difficult time stopping the Lady Beavers multi-faceted offense. Some timely outside shooting and a solid performance on the inside staked the Augusta Beavers to a 26-16 halftime lead.
A late run in the first half gave hope to the Buffaloes coming out of halftime. Unfortunately, Augusta re-established the tempo that had been set in the first half. Augusta outscored the Buffaloes 31-17 in the second half, giving the Beavers a 57-33 win over the Lady Buffs.
Leading scorers for the Buffaloes were sophomores Haley Poeschel with eight points and McKenzie Akina with six. Miranda Lund contributed seven rebounds for the team. Akina and fellow sophomore Carly Buchholz were defensive stalwarts, for Mondovi, forcing the Beavers into eight defensive turnovers each.
Augusta’s Cathy Renneke led her team with 22 points followed by Maddie McConville with 13 points.
The Buffaloes regrouped over the Thanksgiving break before taking on the La Crosse Aquinas Blugolds on Monday, Nov. 30. The Mondovi girls will also kick off their Dunn-St. Croix Conference schedule at home against Colfax on Thursday, Dec. 3.
