Lawrence (Larry) Abts

Larry Abts beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend died peacefully on January 7, 2021, in the comfort of his home in Apache Junction, AZ surrounded by his family.
Larry was born July 17, 1944, to Hubert and Gertrude (Lemmer) Abts and spent his adventure filled early years growing up along the Mississippi River, in Fountain City, WI. As the they say, ”born by the bluffs and raised on the river”.
As a young athlete at Cochrane-Fountain City HS, Larry’s love of basketball was evident. He was named All-Conference and is still remembered for his basketball talents. His passion enabled him to coach various sports teams including his two sons and he rarely missed an event of his grandchildren’s from games to concerts. He was a devoted grandpa! He received his Bachelor’s degree and two Master’s degrees (Industrial Arts/Teaching and School Counseling) from Winona State University. He taught and was a counselor in the Sheboygan Public Schools for many years before moving to Phoenix, AZ, and starting Dent Crafters, Inc. which he owned until his retirement. After retirement he and Rose spent time seeing the world, traveling to many countries. Larry stayed as active as possible right up to the end with boxing, golf, and pickleball.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years Rosemary (Krier) Abts, his sons Chad (Sherry) and Blake (Melanie), grandchildren Robert (Ashleigh), Julie, Jessica, Johnathon, Jacob, Norielle, Justin, Jenna, Sawyer, and Colbee and great grandchildren Evee and Arwen. He is also survived by his siblings Ann (Ron) Wells, Peter, Fr. John, and Carolyn (Jim) Bagniewski, many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends. All meant the world to him.
A Memorial Mass celebrating Larry will be at 11 AM, Saturday June 26th, (presided by Fr. John Abts, ofm), at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Fountain City, WI. There will be a visitation beginning at 9:30 AM until the time of service. Please come with memories of Larry to share. Following the burial there will be a luncheon at St. Mary’s school hall. After the luncheon, the family hopes to gather at Danzinger’s Winery to continue celebrating and sharing remembrances of Larry and the beauty of the Mississippi River Valley. These events are open to everyone.
The family will be donating memorial contributions in Larry’s name to ROCK STEADY BOXING, Mesa, AZ. ROCK STEADY BOXING is a nonprofit boxing gym dedicated to those with Parkinsons disease and where Larry was an active member the last several years of his life.
