Local youths claim K of C free throw championship titles

Boys and girls from the Mondovi and Gilmanton areas tested their free throw shooting skills at the 2015 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship, held Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 14, at the Mondovi School.

Over 60 children ages 9-14 participated in this year’s shootout—an uptick of more than 20 kids from last year’s competition.

All area youth ages 9-14 were eligible to participate.

Ten boys and girls were named local champions and have earned the right to compete at the district level.

Paige Everson was the nine-year-old girls champion while Hunter Guenther took the top spot on the boys’ side.

In the 10-year-old age division, Ryleigh Miller claimed the girls’ title while Jarod Falkner was tops on the boys’ side.

For the 11-year-old competitors, Evan Gray claimed the boys’ championship for his second K of C free throw title in a row while Sarah Fath took the top spot in the girls’ division.

Annabel Price took home the girls’ championship in the 12-year-old division while Lance Larson won the 12-year-old boys’ title.

The winner of the 13-year-old division featured a familiar face as Ryan Fath took the boys’ title—his third free throw contest win—and was named the overall Council Champion on the boys’ side following a tie-breaker. There were no competitors in the 13-year-old girls’ division.

In the 14-year-old bracket, lone competitor Morgan Mohler took her second-straight free throw contest title and was named the overall girls Council Champ following a tie-breaker.

Each of the age group winners will have the opportunity to compete at the upcoming district competition, slated for Sunday, Jan. 25, at Immaculate Conception Parish in Eau Claire, for the chance to advance to regional, state, and international levels.

Winners will be recognized during halftime of the Mondovi boys varsity basketball game vs. Gilmanton on Monday, Feb. 2, where the championship trophies will be presented.

Mondovi Council #5193 sponsored the local competition, which was coordinated by Jason Weiss.
