The Mondovi softball team had a 3-2 week, but the Lady Buffs added a pair of marks in the win column against Dunn-St. Croix Conference opponents Glenwood City and Boyceville with scores of 9-8 and 15-9, respectively.

On Monday, May 4, Mondovi hit the road to face Alma/Pepin, falling 8-1 in a game that saw the Buffaloes commit five fielding errors.

The Eagles posted a 5-0 advantage through four innings until Mondovi managed to get on the board with a run in the fifth inning when Jacquelyn Laursen sent Kaylee Nygaard across the plate with a single. The Buffaloes struggled in the batter’s box throughout the game, managing just four hits against the Eagles’ Emily Kircher, who sat down six Mondovi batters.

The Lady Buffs bounced back from the loss the next day, hosting the Hilltoppers in an exciting battle that saw Mondovi hold off a three-run push in the game’s final inning to take the one-run victory, 9-8.

Glenwood City took an early 3-0 lead, but Mondovi’s bats finally kicked into gear in the third inning to go ahead one run, 4-3. A five-run fifth inning made the score 9-3 in favor of the home squad, but that’s when the Hilltoppers began to fight back. GC posted  two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to challenge Mondovi for the game, but the Buffaloes’ defense managed to make the final outs to secure the win.

Julia Jehn led Mondovi at the plate with a 2-RBI double while Sammi Wulff went 1-for-2 with an RBI triple.

Mondovi continued to roll on Thursday, May 7, heading to Boyceville for a high-scoring affair that saw 10 fielding errors split evenly between both teams.

The Buffaloes again played from behind, trading runs with the Bulldogs until a four-run fourth inning put Mondovi up, 7-3. They kept the bats going through the next two innings, adding eight more runs to build a commanding lead.

Laursen had a stellar day at the plate for the Lady Buffs, going 5-for-6 with a double, 2 RBI and four runs to her credit. Jehn also helped boost the Buffaloes with a pair of doubles and an RBI while McKenzie Akina was 2-for-5 with a double and 3 RBI.

Mondovi also played in a tournament at Independence on Saturday, May 9, suffering a 2-1 loss to Bangor. No further stats were available from that game at press time.

Tournament play also featured a match-up against host Independence/Gilmanton with Mondovi coming up short, 7-6.

Leading Mondovi in the batter’s box were Akina and Wulff, each with a 2-for-4 effort with Wulff smacking a triple. Gabby Scott added a double for the Lady Buffs.

Mondovi headed to Colfax for its lone game this week on Tuesday, May 12. Next week the squad is scheduled to host Elk Mound on Monday, May 18, and Saint Croix Central on Tuesday, May 19.
