Mondovi wrestlers drop dual to tough Boyceville squad, take second at Durand meet

The Mondovi wrestling team spent last week on the road, traveling to seventh-ranked Boyceville for a conference dual on Thursday, Jan. 22, followed by a five-team dual meet tournament at Durand on Friday, Jan. 23.
Against a tough Boyceville squad, the Buffaloes lost by a score of 72-6. The only varsity winning wrestler for Mondovi was 106-pounder Autumn Washok. Westley Price also won a JV match for Mondovi.
The next evening the Mondovi wrestlers traveled to Durand for a tournament. Mondovi went 3-1 on the day, finishing second as a team. Team scores were as follows:
Round 1—Mondovi 47, Osceola 28;
Round 2—Bye;
Round 3—Mondovi 9, St. Croix Central 65;
Round 4—Mondovi 54, Whitehall 30;
Round 5—Mondovi 51, Durand 30.
Nick Pelke (113 pounds) and 138-pound Brett Larson both went undefeated for the day and took first place in their weight classes. Brett Larson also earned his 100th win during his match against Durand. Mondovi’s dual meet record currently stands at 16-4.
“We are still missing a pretty good portion of our team due to illness and injury,” commented Mondovi head coach Randy Pongratz. “Even though we went into this tournament missing about a third of the team, we wrestled tough and our guys didn’t give up.”
The Mondovi wrestlers will have this week off but will return to the mats with a tough opponent, hosting third-ranked Spring Valley/Elmwood on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m.
