Mondovi wrestlers fall to SCC, place fourth at Hillsboro Invite
The Mondovi wrestling team hosted Saint Croix Central for a conference dual on Thursday, Jan. 15, resulting in a 52-24 loss for Mondovi.
Winning matches for the Buffaloes were: 120—Austin Fedie, 138—Trevor Giedd, 145—Dillon Larson, 285—Tristan Lobe.
The Mondovi wrestlers then traveled to Hillsboro for a 13-team invitational on Saturday, Jan. 17. The Buffaloes placed fourth as a team with 203 points.
Place winners for Mondovi were as follows: Trevor Hurt (126 pounds) and 113-pounder Nick Pelke both placed fifth. Placing fourth were 220-pounder Devon Yarrington and Fedie at 120 pounds. Brett Larson (138 pounds) placed second, and Mondovi’s lone champion was Lobe at 285 pounds.
Lobe pinned each of his opponents on Saturday. In the final round he pinned Fennimore’s Deven O’Brien who was 30-2 and ranked 7th in the state at 285 pounds in Division 3.
“Although we were missing some of our varsity wrestlers due to injury and illness, I am really proud of the way our team wrestled this weekend!” commented Mondovi head coach Randy Pongratz. “The guys we actually had wrestle really gave it their all.”
The Mondovi wrestlers will travel to Boyceville to take on the seventh-ranked Bulldogs on Thursday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m. The squad will also travel to Durand for a six-team dual meet tournament on Friday, Jan. 23, beginning at 4 p.m.
