The Mondovi Police Department recently added a new patrolman to its staff and filled the department’s police sergeant position that has been vacant since 1998.

New patrol officer Adam Julson started his duties with the City of Mondovi on Monday, June 29, and current patrolman Tim Hollister is now the city’s new sergeant.

Julson, who grew up in Osseo, graduating from Osseo-Fairchild High School in 2003, says he has always been interested in law enforcement.

“I thought it would be a great career where I would get to know people and do something different every day,” he said.

“I spent one year at Carroll College in Waukesha before changing my mind on my career path,” Julson continued, noting he was originally interested in forensic science.

Julson then transferred to Mid State Technical College in Wisconsin Rapids, where he graduated with an associate’s degree in criminal justice law enforcement in 2007.

While still attending college, Julson was hired full time by the Augusta Police Department, where he worked for just  under nine years. Julson said while working in Augusta, he met his wife, Kari, who currently works at Mondovi Elementary as a first grade teacher. The couple got married in 2010.

“While in Augusta I attended several trainings such as evidence technician, field training officer, truck law and both handgun and rifle instructor,” he shared.

Julson said that his decision to apply for the position in Mondovi was due to the proximity to his wife’s job and “loving the area.”

“I enjoy hunting and fishing and the Mondovi area provides great opportunities for both,” he said.

Julson said that he is excited for the opportunity to start working in Mondovi and is looking forward to meeting the community.

“I hope that I can bring my training and experience to Mondovi and work with the great team there to provide quality services to the city,” Julson added.

Hollister was officially promoted to sergeant during a Mondovi City Council meeting on June 9.

The sergeant’s position will serve as second-in-command to Chief of Police Scott Smith.

“I was very, very excited,” said Hollister of receiving the new title, noting he was looking forward to working more closely with Chief Smith in a leadership role.

A Mondovi native, Hollister began work as a full-time MPD patrolman on May 27 after spending the past decade with the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department as a jailer/dispatcher and sheriff’s deputy.

In a little over a month with the MPD, Hollister has already accomplished a lot.

A new SUV patrol squad and various equipment have been ordered to help MPD officers do their jobs more safely and effectively.

Hollister also said he and Julson have worked together to procure free equipment from other police departments, including a safety cage for the MPD’s Dodge Charger squad car and a used radar gun.

Mondovi’s new sergeant also plans to begin writing multiple grants to obtain more police equipment as well as grants to assist with traffic enforcement.

Hollister listed obtaining patrol rifles for the squad cars for public safety purposes and military surplus equipment through the 1033 Program as a few immediate goals.

“We’re going to try to get as much free equipment as we can,” said Hollister of writing the grants. “It’s a lot of work, but it’ll pay off in the end.”

He also plans to apply for “Click It or Ticket” and OWI grants to cover overtime pay for officers to do some additional traffic enforcement work.

Hollister also recently led a safety class at Mondovi Elementary, and the bike helmet safety program is ongoing this summer.

That program provides coupons for free ice cream from McT’s for kids who are seen by MPD officers wearing their bike helmets around town.
