Tough Mustang squad tops Panther boys
by Nick Urness, student writer
On Thursday, Jan. 14, the Panthers traveled to Melrose-Mindoro to take on the Mustangs, losing by a score of 78-51.
The Mustangs came out sharp right away, going up by six in the early going. However, the Panthers stuck with the No. 2 ranked team in Division Four for much of the first half. At one point the Panthers were only down two, 25-23, with five minutes to go. The Mustangs then decided to show why they are undefeated and caused the Panthers to turn it over many times in a row. As a result, the Panthers trailed, 46-27, at halftime.
The Panthers continued to struggle in the second half with turnovers and were unable to score, leading to the lopsided result.
Senior Nick Urness led the team with 26 points and senior Derric Gray had seven assists.
Also of note, sophomore Colton Werlein swished in a “3” for his first varsity points!
The Panthers played at Blair-Taylor on Tuesday, Jan. 19, and will host Whitehall on Friday night, Jan. 22.
