Village of Strum water levels ‘up and running’ after valve malfunction

We are thankful that people are so understanding. Everybody is fine, we have water and things are running great.” ~Michelle Loken, Strum Village Clerk

The Village of Strum had a bit of a surprise issue with their water levels late last week. A water pump malfunction caused levels to get dangerously low, causing school to let out early on Friday afternoon, May 29.

Village Clerk Michelle Loken shared that there had been a lot of road construction going on in the village of Strum on Thursday, so the water valves were shut off to connect the water main.

“The pump that pumps water into the water tower malfunctioned, bringing the village water levels to a dangerously low level,” Loken said.

On Friday morning, the Public Works Department had found that the valve pressure was affected due to an air pocket, which was causing issues with water flow.

“It was causing no water pressure to pump,” Loken said.

The water issues caused the Eleva-Strum School District to close early on Friday for sanitation reasons.

“If the school would have stayed open, we probably would have ran out of water,” Loken said, adding that the middle and high school water levels were not effected.

“It was amazing we didn’t run out of water completely,” Loken said.

Once the lines were blown out, everything was back to working order, Loken added. As of 8 p.m. on Friday, the water was back to normal levels.

Loken said that thanks to social media, the word was spread quickly to the Strum residents, as the Village of Strum has their own Facebook page. The many “shares” got the word out to the community, which helped with water conservation.

“We are thankful that people are so understanding,” Loken said, adding this has never happened in the village before. “Everybody is fine, we have water and things are running great.”

Loken added that the water usage during the Broiler Fest in Eleva was unaffected. Although Eleva and Strum have a combined sewer system, their water systems are separate.
