Win some, lose some—Lady Cards have busy week

The Eleva-Strum girls basketball team snagged a one-point victory in non-conference play against Royall on Saturday, capping off the week on a positive note following losses to Durand and Augusta.

On Tuesday, Jan. 19, the Lady Cards traveled to Durand to play the Lady Panthers. Durand led the game in the first half, scoring 30 points to the Cardinals’ 12. The Cardinals weren’t ready to give up and kept pushing through the second half of the game, but E-S fell to the Panthers by a score of 55-26.

The leading scorers for the night were Greta Monson with seven points, Josie Olson with five and Jenna Booth with four. Abby Palkowski also contributed with six assists. Overall, the girls had 37 rebounds for the night.

Tuesday night’s game was followed by a game at home against Augusta on Thursday, Jan. 21. The ladies started off strong in the first half of the game, scoring 14 points while only allowing the Beavers six points.

However, the Beavers caught up to the Cardinals in the second half, scoring 31 points, while the Cardinals were only able to score 17 points, helping Augusta upset the Cardinals 37-31.

For the night, the top leading scorer was Olson with eight points followed by Booth with seven. Aubree Lasher and Tatum Everson also contributed with four points apiece. Turnovers hurt the Cardinals, who racked up a total of 36 over the course of the night.

On Saturday, Jan. 23, E-S hosted Royall to play a rescheduled game from Tues. Dec. 29. The first half of the game was close, but Royall scored 14 points to take a three-point lead. Although behind a few points, the Cardinals were not ready to give up the fight. 

The Lady Cards really pushed points in the second half of the game, scoring a total of 19 points while holding Royall to 15. In the end, the Lady Cards edged Royall by one point, 30-29, to take the non-conference win.

Booth led the Lady Cards with 11 points followed by Mackenzie Hutchins, Taylor Everson and Tatum Everson, all with four apiece. E-S recorded 42 rebounds on the day.

The Lady Cards traveled to Melrose Mindoro on Tuesday, Jan. 26, and will play the Blair-Taylor Wildcats on Friday, Jan. 29, at home.
