John Franklyn Smith

John Franklyn Smith, 87, died on August 2, 2025, at Mayo Clinic, St. Mary’s Campus. Born on August 6, 1937 to Vern Smith and Clara (Krusmark) Smith, John was a Plainview local, graduating from Plainview High School in 1956 before serving honorably in the Air Force from 1957 to 1961.
After his military service, John pursued a career in steam and refrigeration engineering through vocational school, eventually working for Steamer Industries, Plainview Milk Products, and Lakeside Foods. His dedication to his community was evident in many of the roles he took on over the years. John proudly served as Plainview Fire Chief for 11 years, participated in the Plainview American Legion and Disabled American Veterans - Rochester, and led as Commander of the Chatfield VFW. Additionally, he devoted 12 years to the Plainview Ambulance Service and embraced the opportunity to be a Boy Scout leader for 12 years, six of which he spent as Scout Master.
A member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, John married the love of his life, Marilyn Kuhlmann, on October 25, 1963. John enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing (both downhill and cross-country), and traveling with family and friends.
John Smith is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Smith; daughter, Lisa (John) Hildebrandt, three grandchildren, Amanda, Stephanie, and Andrew. He is preceded in death by his parents, and one grandson, Michael.
A memorial service for John will be held on Tuesday, August 12, 2025 at Immanuel Lutheran Church (45 W Broadway, Plainview, MN 55964) with a visitation an hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Plainview, MN. Donations can be made to the Plainview Fire Department or Immanuel Lutheran Church.
